2012 London Olympic Game: Day Two

It was mixed results for the Americans in the pool on Sunday. Dana Vollmer won gold and broke the world record in the 100-meter women’s butterfly becoming the first woman to crack the 56 second barrier. Vollmer’s 55.98 easily beat the former record of 56.06 set by Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom in 2009.

In 2008, Ryan Lochte’s out-touching a French swimmer to win gold and help Michael Phelps go a perfect eight for eight at the Beijing games. Sunday, the French got sweet revenge, swimming down Lochte on the on the anchor leg to get the touch and the gold in the 4×100 freestyle. It was silver for Phelps and Lochte, Phelps much sharper in this event, swimming a terrific second leg and leaving the Americans a .51 second lead at the second split.

Kimberly Rhode surpassed Al Oerter, Carl Lewis, and Jackie Joyner-Kersee in American Olympic history. Who is Kimberly Rhode ??? She’s a skeet shooter that that won gold Sunday with a near perfect score off 99 which simpley put means she hit 99 of her 100 targets. By comparison, silver medalist Wei Ning of China could hit just 90 of 100. Rhode becomes the first American with individual medals in five straight Olympics, winning in double trap at Atlanta as a teenager in 1996, bronze in that event four years later at Sydney, re-claimed the gold at Athens in 2004 and won the silver in skeet at Beijing in 2008, and now gold in London.

Team USA men’s basketball spanks France in opener

It was close for one quarter but Team USA overcame a slow start to rout Tony Parker and the French 98-71. Kevin Durrant led the way for the Americans with 22, Kevin Love chipping in with 14 off the bench. Lebron James handed out eight assists while Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler each had nine rebounds. Team USA was strong on the glass, outrebounding the French 56-40. Next up is Tunisia who was beaten 56-50 in their group opener.

Jimmie Johnson kisses the Bricks in at Indy

Jimmie Johnson was much the best, much of the day, in cruising to his record-tying fourth win at the Brickyard 400. Johnson’s perfect restart after a caution with just 20 laps to go was all the No.48 car needed to run away from Kyle Busch and Greg Biffle. Johnson also won the Brickyard in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Dale Earnhardt Jr. drove to another rock solid top ten finishing fourth and claimed the points lead in the Chase when last week’s leader Matt Kenseth wrecked and finished 35th. Nascar will be at Pocono next week for the Pennsylvania 400 where Brad Keselowski is the defending champ.

Piercy takes the Canadian Open, Freddie wins Sr. British Open

Scott Piercy shot a three-under final round 67 to win the second PGA event of his career at the RBC Canadian Open. Piercy was a shot better than Robert Garrigus and William McGirt. Garrigus, the third round leader, couldn’t seal the deal only managing to shoot an even par 70 on the final day. Next up is the WGC-Bridgestone Open in Akron Ohio.

In Scotland, Freddie Couples rolled in a 25-foot birdie on his final hole to close birdie-birdie and win the Senior British Open at Turnberry. Couple bested Gary Hallberg by two shots in claiming his first title ever in Great Britain. Bernard Langer, who led almost every step of the way until Sunday, collapsed with a final round 75 to finish sixth.

Alpha wins Jim Dandy, Paynter wins the Haskell

The three-year-old colts were in action this weekend in their final tuneups before the Travers at Saratoga and the fall series that culminates with the Breeder’s Cup. Saturday at Saratoga, Alpha was the best in the Grade II Jim Dandy going wire-to-wire to beat a field of eight that included Teeth of the Dog and Neck N’ Neck. Sunday, Paynter was much the best in the $1 million dollar Grade I Haskell defeating a field that included Triple Crown series heavies Gemologist and Dullahan. Hanson will be a prohibitive favorite in next week’s West Virginia Derby.

2012 London Olympic Game: Day One

After one event, it’s Ryan Lochte 1-0 over Michael Phelps. Lochte crushed the field in the 400-meter individual medley by more than three seconds to win the first gold of the 2012 Summer Games for the US. Michael Phelps who was life and death to even qualify for the final, did not medal finishing fourth. Lochte’s winning performance was not as surprising as Phelps also ran struggle. It was the first time that Phelps failed to medal in an Olympic even since the 2000 games in Sidney when he was 15. In Athens and Beijing, Phelps raced 16 times with 14 golds and two bronze. Phelps is scheduled in six more events. This could be Ryan Lochte’s Olympic Games.

Team USA’s women’s basketball team overcame a sluggish start to down Croatia 81-56 in their group play opener. Team USA opened up a 19-7 lead right off the git go but the Croats hit five of six threes to trail by three at halftime. The Americans used a 16-0 run as part of a 28-9 fourth quarter to seal the blowout.

The U.S. women’s soccer team blanked Colombia 3-0 to go 2-0 in their group play. Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach, and Carli Lloyd got the goals for Team USA. Wambach’s goal made her the most prolific scoring American woman in Olympic play with with six goals passing Mia Hamm and Tiffany Milbrett.

The raging Cincinnati Reds hit five home runs, two by Ryan Ludwig, in beating Colorado 9-7 for their ninth straight win. Drew Stubbs, Scott Rolen, and Todd Frazier had the other Red Leg round trippers. Johnny Cueto, who now has three streaks of four straight wins, picked up his 13th win. Carlos Gonzalez was the lone bright spot for the Rockies going two-for-four with three RBIs. Cargo has now hit safely in 27 straight games at Coors Field.

Boston blew a 6-1 lead to the Yankees but got bailed out when Curtis Granderson misplayed a ball in center as the Red Sox downed the Bronx Bombers 8-6. A Mark Teixeira two-run homer in the eighth knotted things at 6-6 but Granderson charged and fell on a Pedro Ciriaco triple that turned out to be the difference. Yankee starter C.C. Sabathia gave up a season high six runs on eight hits over six innings of work.

NFL training camp news

The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed running back Maurice Jones-Drew on the reserve/did not report list, an indication they don’t expect their star player to show up to training camp anytime soon. Jones-Drew is holding out in hopes of getting the team to renegotiate his contract. MoJo led the league in rushing He has two years remaining on a five-year heavily front loaded $31 million deal. The team says it has no plans to renegotiate.

Hamlin wins pole for Brickyard 400

Denny Hamlin turned in a lap of 182.763 mph to win the pole for Sunday’s Brickyard 400. It was Hamlin’s 11th career pole and his second of 2012. Hamlin won the inaugural Nationwide race on Saturday putting him in a rare position at a unique double. Carl Edwards joins Hamlin on the front row with Joey Logano, Aric Almirola, Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Paul Menard, Jeff Gordon, and points leader Matt Kenseth round out the first ten. Jimmie Johnson is the 6/1 favorite with
Carl Edwards 7/1, Tony Stewart 15/2, and Kyle Busch 9/1 all at single digits.

Garrigus takes one-shot lead into Sunday at Canadian Open

Robert Garrigus will take a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the RBC Canadian Open. Garrigus, who leads the tournament in driving distance and greens in regulation, is at 16-under after firing rounds of 64-66-64. He’ll be joined in the final pairing with William McGirt who is a shot back. There are just six golfers within five shots but scores have been there to be had all week so it wouldn’t be impossible to see a charge from the middle of the field.

Jacque Vaughn hired as new coach of the Orlando Magic

Former Kansas Jayhawk and San Antonio Spur assistant Jacque Vaughn has been hired as coach of the Orlando Magic. Vaughn, just 37, last played in the NBA in 2009 and has spent the last two years cutting his teeth under Greg Popovich. Vaughn inherits a team in flux and still looking to resolve the Dwight Howard situation.
