Kaepernick leads 49ers to 32-7 rout of the Bears

In last night’s action on Monday night football, the San Francisco 49ers rushed to a 20-0 halftime lead (scoring on their first four possessions) and then cruised to a 32-7 win over the Bears. Colin Kaepernick was 16-23 for 243 yards and two scores in his NFL debut as a starter while linebacker Aldon Smith registered five sacks. The game was over at the kickoff as the 49ers did whatever they wanted against a pretty good Chicago defense while the 49er pass rush relentlessly pounded Jay Cutler backup Jason Campbell. The Bears had just 28 yards rushing and -13 (yes negative) yards passing in the first half. At the betting window, San Francisco and the over got their for the game and both halves.

NFL News and Notes

New England’s All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski had surgery on his broken forearm and will be out 4-6 weeks. Gronk was hurt late in the Pats blowout of the Colts blocking on an extra point.

Plaxico Burress is scheduled to visit the Pittsburg Steelers today. Burress was drafted by the Steelers and has also played for the Giants and Jets. He has 63 career touchdown passes.

The Baltimore Raven’s Ed Reed has been suspended for one game by the league as a habitual offender of hits to the head and neck of a defenseless receiver. The suspension, if upheld on appeal or not reduced, will cost Reed a $423,529 game check. Reed was flagged for a hit on Emmanuel Sanders during the Baltimore-Pittsburgh game on Sunday night. It was his third violation within a three-year period.

With his team sitting at 3-7 and for all purposes eliminated from any kind of playoff hope, Andy Reid said that he will not resign as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Reid told a Monday presser that he will forge ahead looking to make the Eagles a better team and himself a better coach.

Kyrie Irving out with broken index finger

Kyrie Irving, last year’s NBA Rookie of the Year will be out at least four weeks with a fractured index finger.

The Cavaliers announced Monday:

Cavaliers Guard Kyrie Irving received an MRI and CT Scan of his contused left index finger (3rd quarter of Saturday night’s game at The Q vs. Dallas) today at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health. The results of the MRI and CT Scan revealed a hairline/non-displaced fracture in the finger. The injury will be treated with taping and a splint. He is currently projected to be Out for the next four weeks while the fracture heals, and is scheduled to be re-evaluated in two weeks. His status will be updated as appropriate at that point.

Beckham leaving the Galaxy after MSL Cup final

David Beckham announced Monday that the MLS Cup on Dec. 1 will be his final game with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Beckham will not retire but is looking for one more challenge to conclude his playing career. During Beckham’s six seasons with the Galaxy, he helped lead the club to three MLS Cup berths, including the championship in 2011 when they beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0. The two teams meet for the MLS Cup on Dec. 1, with Beckham hoping to end his MLS career and time in Los Angeles with one more title. Beckham hopes to continue his involvement with the MLS as an owner somewhere down the line.

The re-energized Toronto Blue Jays hired former manager John Gibbons to return for a second run with the club. Gibbons managed Toronto 2004-2008 and had a 305-305 record, making him the third winningest manager in franchise history. Gibbons replaces John Farrell who jumped ship this fall, returning to the Boston Red Sox as manager after serving as the pitching coach under Terry Francona.
