Bama wins SEC, Wisconsin the Big Ten, Florida State the ACC, Kansas State the Big 12
It was championship Saturday in college football and when the smoke had cleared, Alabama, Wisconsin and Florida State were the winners. Alabama rushed for an SEC championship game record 347 yards but needed a late 45-yard bomb from AJ McCarron to Amari Cooper to turn back Georgia. The Crimson Tide will meet Notre Dame in the National Championship game January 7th in Miami. Wisconsin dropped ten touchdowns on Nebraska blackshirt defense to drill the Huskers 70-31. The Badgers will meet Stanford in the Rose Bowl. Stanford won the Pac 12 crown Friday night with a 27-24 win over UCLA. Florida State stooped Georgia Tech 21-15 to win the ACC title and an Orange Bowl bid. Kansas State had a big second half to spank Texas 42-24 to take Big 12 honors and secure a Fiesta Bowl bid. SP3 will do a complete championship Saturday recap in the Monday report.
Kansas City Chief linebacker involved in murder/suicide
Kansas City linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend on Saturday, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and then turned the gun on himself in front of HC Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli at the Chiefs practice facility. The Carolina Panthers have been told by the league to travel to Kansas City and will play the Chiefs Sunday as scheduled.
Belcher was a 25-year-old native of West Babylon, N.Y., on Long Island, who played college ball at Maine. He signed with the Chiefs an undrafted free agent, made the team and stayed with it for four years, moving into the starting lineup. He’d played in all 11 games this season. SP3 will follow the story as more information becomes available. SP3’s thoughts and prayers go out to the Kansas City organization and to the families involved.
The NFL returns today with 14 games. There are no real marquee matchups this week but there are six divisional games, a couple with playoff implications including Pittsburg at Baltimore. Philadelphia travels to Dallas for the Sunday night late show. SP3 will have a complete recap on what transpired on the field and at the window on Monday’s report.
Spurs top Grizz, Pop on the 250K fine
Tony Parker and Tim Duncan combined for 57 points as the Spurs overcame a 13-point halftime deficit to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 99-95 in overtime. Duncan added 15 board to go along with 27 points. Marc Gasol led four Grizz starters in double figure with 20 points. San Antonio won after resting four starters (sending them home early) in Thursday’s 105-100 loss in Miami. The team was fined 250K by the league on Friday and it is unclear whether the team will appeal.

Galaxy send Beckham out a winner, win MLS Cup 3-1 over Houston
The La Galaxy overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with three second half goals to win their second consecutive MLS title, fourth overall, and send David Beckham out a winner in his final MSL game. Calen Carr opened the scoring for Houston in the 44th minute but Omar Gonzalez got the equalizer on a long header in the 61st and Landon Donovan the winner on a penalty in the 65th. Robbie Keane added an insurance goal on another PK in injury time as the Dynamo sent all hands forward.
It was like a Hollywood script for global superstar David Beckham who goes out on top after a six year career in the MSL, all with the Galaxy. Beckham has announced that he will not retire but may return to the US and MSL sometime in the future, probably in some type of ownership capacity.
