Broncos win 35-24 after trailing 24-0 at half

If you went to bed with a San Diego ticket in your hand and the Chargers up 24-0 at halftime, you were in for a surprise this morning. Denver took advantage of a Philip Rivers fumble and three Rivers second-half interceptions to complete an improbable 35-24 win over the division rival Bolts. The key play of the game happened at the 4:41 mark of the third quarter with the Chargers leading 24-7 and driving inside the Bronco 30. Rivers went back to pass and was hit from behind and fumbled the ball. Tony Carter’s 65-yard scoop and score got the Broncos withing 10 and Peyton Manning did the rest as Denver won the fourth quarter 21-0. A Chris Harris 46-yard interception pick six with 2:20 left sealed the deal and guaranteed to Chargers would be the first team in NFL history to lead by 24 points and lose by double-digits. The Denver win made the underdogs 12-2 for Week Six in the NHL. The Over finished at 8-5-1. Home teams were 10-4.

Ray Lewis out for the season with torn triceps

The Baltimore Ravens lost two key pieces of an already shaky defense on Monday when MRIs on middle-linebacker Ray Lewis and CB Lardarius Webb revealed a torn triceps and torn ACL respectively. The injury could be career threatening for the 37-year-old Lewis, the heart and soul of the Raven stop unit for almost two decades and a certain first-ballot Hall of Famer. Webb might be an even bigger blow to an already suspect Raven secondary.

Giants deck Cards 7-1 to level NLCS series

San Francisco snapped a three-game home playoff losing streak and Ryan Vogelsong became the first Giant starter to register a win in the 2012 playoffs with a 7-1 win over St Louis. Vogelsong pitched seven innings of one-run four-hit ball and Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro tok care of the offense. Pagan led off the game with a solo home run and Scutaro had two hits and two RBIs before leaving with a hip injury. The Giants got fired up when the Cardinals Matt Holliday took out Scutaro with a hard slide to break up a double play. San Francisco led 5-1 after four innings and cruised to the win. Game Three of the NLCS is Wednesday in St Louis where Matt Cain is scheduled to face Kyle Lohse.

In Tuesday’s Game Three of the ALCS series, New York sends Philip Hughes to the mound to face Justin Verlander. The Yankees face a daunting task down 0-2, without Derek Jeter, and with half the lineup not hitting. Verlander is 6-0 with a 0.82 ERA in his last six starts but just 1-1 against the Bombers this year with an ERA of 5.86. The Tigers are -180 favorites with the total 7 shaded 25 cents to the under.

UL Lafayette and North Texas square off in Tuesday night NCAAF tilt

The Ragin’ Cajuns of UL Lafayette travel to Denton, Texas to meet the Mean Green of North Texas in a rare Tuesday night Sunbelt matchup. The visitors are four-point favorites with the high/low set at 56. Lafayette has won the last five games in the series by an average of 13 ppg. The Cajuns are 4-1 with their lone loss at Oklahoma State. North Texas is 1-4 having played four of their five games on the road. The teams share Troy as a common opponent. Lafayette beat Troy by 13 while NTU lost 14-7 at home to the Trojans.

Nets open Brooklyn diggs with preseason win over the Wizards

Brooklyn saw it’s first professional sports since the Dodgers left in 1957 when the Nets opened the brand new Barkley Center with a 98-88 exhibition win over the Washington Wizards. Chants of “Lets Go Brooklyn” were heard from the announced crowd of 14,219, 3,500 shy of a sellout. With a population of 2.5 million people, Brooklyn would be the fourth-largest city (if outside of NYC) in America (bigger than Houston and Chicago) so the Nets should have little problem putting people in the seats, especially if the win a little at the onset.

Klinsmann will not play for a draw

The US men’s National Soccer Team can advance to the final stage of 2014 World Cup qualifying with a draw vs Guatemala tonight in Kansas City but don’t expect the US to bunker down. USA team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann is made of sterner stuff.

“Our approach to the game is clear. We want to win this game. You can only win a game if you attack and go forward, and that’s what we’re going to do,” Klinsmann said before a final training session at Livestrong Sporting Park on Monday. “We’re not going to look for a tie.”

The US and Guatemala are both 3-1-1 and sitting atop the group with 10 poinst. Jamaica is three points back at 2-2-1. The top two teams of both groups advance to the final qualifying round.
