Browns thump Bills, Cards and Dodgers draw first blood, No.12 UCLA gets tough road win, Freeman released, US leads Presidents Cup, Kobe has knee work + Thursday Recap: Friday, October 4, 2013
- Updated: October 4, 2013
Both starting QBs go down as Browns stop Bills
The Cleveland Browns scored the final 17 points of the game to beat Buffalo 37-24 at Cleveland. Both starting quarterbacks, EJ Manuel for the Bills and Brian Hoyer for the Browns went down with knee injuries leaving it to the backups to settle matters. Brandon Weeden went 13-24 for 179 yards and a score in relief to bring the home team back. A pick-six in the final minute made the final score deceptively one-sided. Favorite and over players cashed their tickets.
Wainwright and Kershaw come up big in Game Is
Both NLDS series opened last night and both No.1 starters came up big. Adam Wainwright pitched seven innings of three-hit one-run ball and Carlos Beltran started off a seven run third inning with a three-run homer as the Cardinals rolled Pittsburgh 9-1. Clayton Kershaw struck out 12 in seven innings and the Dodgers were never-in-doubt in their 6-1 win at Atlanta. Adrian Gonzalez had the big blow on offense for the Bums with a two-run homer.
All four division series are in action today with the Pittsburgh/St Louis Game II first pitch at 1:05 EST followed By Tampa Bay/Boston Game I at 3:05 PM EST. The Detroit Tigers and 20-game winner Max Scherzer take on the Oakland A’s and 40-year old fireballer Bartolo Colon in tonight’s 9:35 PM EST finale. Detroit is a short -122 road favorite and the total has been set at 6 1/2 shaded 25 cents to the over.
Hundley leads No.12 UCLA over Utah 34-27
In Thursday night’s feature college football action, UCLA used strong defense and an all around big night from quarterback Brett Hundley as UCLA remained unbeaten with a 34-27 win. Hundley accomplished a rare trifeca with a passing touchdown, a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown. The Bruin defense did its part by intercepting Utah quarterback Travis Wilson six times.
Freeman free as Bucs release embattled quarterback
The Josh Freeman saga is over in Tampa Bay as the Bucs released their former captain and starting quarterback. It was win/win for Freeman who will get paid (Tampa Bay is on the hook for his entire $8.6 million dollar salary) and can negotiate wherever he wants. Freeman was benched for poor play and generally blamed for Tampa’s 0-3 start. Freeman had a number of run-ins with coach Greg Schiano and this story is far from over.
US leads Presidents Cup after Day I
Tiger Woods was arguably the best player on the course Thursday, teaming with Matt Kuchar to beat Angel Cabrera and Marc Leishman 5 and 4 giving America a 3.5-2.5 lead over the Internationals in this year’s Presidents Cup. The Americans were spanking the guests before a rain delay at Muirfield (Ohio) instilled new life into the Internationals who were down in every match when play was stopped.
Kobe is off to Germany for knee work
Kobe Bryant is in Germany to get a platelet-rich plasma therapy called Orthokine on his right knee. Bryant had the procedure in 2011 and the therapy is completely unrelated to the Achilles tendon tear that he suffered at the end of last year’s regular season. Bryant is doing light jogging and set shooting as he rehabs from the surgery to repair the torn Achilles.
