Bulls win and cover, Spurs rebound over Warriors
The Miami Heat beat the Chicago Bulls 104-94 to take a 2-1 series lead. Chris Bosh led the way for Miami with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Nate Robinson had a 17/6/7 game line for Chicago. The game was much closer that the final score with the heat extending late at the foul line. In fact, the Heat never had their -8.5 point impost covered until the final 17 seconds when Lebron James hit two foul shots.
At the Oracle in San Francsico, the San Antonio Spurs jumped out to a nine-point halftime lead and then held on to beat Golden State 102-92. In a game that was basically even statistically, the Spurs beat the Warriors at their own game by shooting 40-79 (50%) from the field. Golden State never got untracked shooting just 35-89 for 39%. Tony Parker had 32/5/5 for the winners while Tim Duncan added 23/10.
Knicks/Pacers and Thunder/Grizz previews
The Knicks and Pacers and the Thunder and Grizz are back in action in Game IIIs on Saturday. All four teams have been off since Tuesday. At 5:05 PM EST, the Memphis Grizzlies are -5 over Oklahoma City with the high/low set at 186. In the 8:05 PM EST nightcap, the Pacers are -4 over the Knicks with the over/under down a half tick at 183 1/2. Both series are tied at one game a piece. Catch the Thunder/Grizz on ESPN, the Knicks/Pacers on ABC.
One goal games and overtime continues in NHL playoffs
The deluge of overtime and one-goal games continued on a busy Friday night in the NHL playoffs. At Boston, Toronto staved off elimination with a 2-1 over the Bruins. Goalie Jame Reimer starred for the Leafs with 43 saves. Boston still leads the series 3-2. Washington took a 3-2 lead in their series with the Rangers after a 3-2 overtime win at the Cap Center. Mike Ribiero got the winner at 9:24 of extra time. Henrik Zetterberg had two goals including the winner at 1:04 of overtime as the Detroit Red Wings forced a Game Seven in their series with the Ducks. Pavel Datsyuk chipped in with a goal and two assists. Dustin Penner’s goal with one second left in the second period stood up as the Los Angeles Kings eliminated St Louis with a 4-2 win at the Staples Center. The defending Stanley Cup champs won four straight after dropping the first two games in St Louis.
Just one game of frozen pond on Saturday as the Pittsburg Penguins look to eliminate the NY Islanders in Game Six at the Nassau Coliseum. The Pens are -170 with total set on six but shaded 20 cents to the under. This could be the Islanders final home game on the Island as they will move to the Barclay Center in Brooklyn next year.
MLB news and Notes
Fiedlin Culbreth, the crew chief of the umpiring crew involved in last night’s rules gaffe in the Angels/Astros game, has been fined and suspended for two games by Major League Baseball. Culbreth allowed an illegal pitching change by the Astros in the seventh inning and the game was immediately protested by Angel’s manager Mike Scioscia. The Angels came back to win the game 6-5 mitigating the damage. The other members of the crew …. Brian O’Nora, Bill Welke and Adrian Johnson …. were all fined as well but not suspended.
It was a tough day for the Washington National outfield. Jason Werth is scheduled to placed on the 15-day DL with lingering hamstring issues. Werth is hitting .260 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 107 plate appearances. Bryce Harper was also out of the lineup Friday night after having an ingrown toenail removed. Harper is day-to-day.
On the field, St Louis Cardinal pitcher Shelby Miller gave up a lead-off hit to Colorado’s Eric Young and then set down the next 27 Rockies in order for a complete game one-hitter. Miller threw 113 pitches in striking out 13 as the Red Birds coasted to a 3-0 win.
Sergio one-up on Tiger after 36 at Players
Sergio Garcia fired a second round 65 to take a one-shot lead over Tiger Woods after 36 holes of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Garcia is -11 at the halfway mark while Tiger Woods is one back after B2B rounds of 67. Lee Westwood is one of three golfers two back at -9. A whopping 77 players made the even par cut.
Mike Tyson detective cartoon in the works
A Mike Tyson cartoon is in development at the Adult Swim network. “Mike Tyson Mysteries” will star Tyson as a detective accompanied by his trusty sidekick, a foul-mouthed pigeon. The series is scheduled for next season but no premier date has been announced. Tyson will voice the animated character and all make special appearances.
Kyle Busch wins fifth Nationwide race of 2013
Kyle Busch passed Joey Logano with 18 laps left and went on to capture his fifth Nationwide win of the year at Darlington. It was a big night for the Joe Gibbs Racing stable with JGR taking four of the top five spots with Busch, Elliot Sadler (2nd), Brian Vickers (3rd) and Matt Kenseth (5th). Busch looks for the weekend sweep after qualifying third for Saturday night’s Southern 500
