The 109th MLB World Series starts tonight at Fenway
Two classic franchises square off tonight in the opening game of the 109th MLB World Series. Tonight at Fenway Park, the Red Sox and Jon Lester are -123 favorites over the St Louis Cardinals and Adam Wainwright. At this writing, the total is 7 with the over shaded 20 cents to the over. UL Lafayette downs Arkansas State 23-7 in Tuesday Sunbelt action
Alonzo Harris rushed for 105 yards and two TDs as UL Lafayette won their fifth straight game beating Arkansas State 23-7 in Jonesboro. The Cajuns led 20-7 at the half and were on cruise control the rest of the way. Favorite (although the Wolves took a lot of late money) and the Under ticket holders got the money.
NFL News and Notes
Josh Freeman has come out out of Monday night’s debacle vs the Giants with concussion like symptoms and will need to complete the league head injury protocol to be cleared. Opening day starter Christian Ponder will likely get the start Monday night vs the Packers.
The Cleveland Browns will start veteran Jason Campbell over Brendan Weeden in their Sunday game vs the Chiefs. Campbell becomes the 20th starter for the Browns since the franchise resurfaced in Cleveland in 1999. Weeden currently ranks 32nd in the league in completion percentage, 31st in yards per attempt and 30th in passer rating.
The St Louis Rams signed two quarterbacks on Tuesday to back up starter Kellen Clemens. The Rams signed Austin Davis and Brady Quinn to back up Clemens who has been pressed into action after starter Sam Bradford tore his ACL vs the Panthers and is out for the year. Davis was the third QB for the Rams last year and Quinn was cut by the Jets on Monday.
Giants re-sign Lincecum to a two-year $35 million dollar deal
The San Francisco Giants have re-signed “The Freak”, Tim Lincecum, to a two-year $35 million dollar deal. Lincecum went 10-14 with a 4.37 ERA and 193 strikeouts in 32 starts this season and is 89-70 (and a Cy Young) with a 3.46 ERA over his seven-year major league career. Lincecum has had three straight losing seasons but is also one of only six Giants pitchers to win at least 10 games in six straight years.
Clemson QB Tajh Boyd gambling rumors
It was a tough weekend for Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd. Not only were Boyd’ No.3 ranked Tigers taken behind the woodshed by Florida State but Boyd’s name was also prevalent on the internet rumor mill for allegedly being associated with heavy NFL gambling debts. Kessler hat trick propels Leafs over Anaheim
Further proof that good things happen to good people, Toronto Maple Leaf sniper Phil Kessler rented a luxury suite for 24 child cancer patients at the Air Canada Center for Tuesday’s game with the Ducks. Kessler then went out and scored a hat trick as the Leafs came from 2-0 down to win 4-2 and snapping Anaheim’s seven-game winning streak.
