Central Michigan outlasts Western Kentucky

With 51 seconds left in the game and fourth-and-two from the Central Michigan 19, WKU interim head Lance Guidry bypassed a 37-yard field goal that would have forced overtime and instead went for the win. The Chippewas got the stop and CMU hung on for a 24-21 win in the Little Caesar Pizza Bowl. Chip quarterback Ryan Radcliff threw for 253 yards and three scores while Zurlon Tipton chipped in with 101 yards on 23 carries.

Military, Belk and Holiday Bowls go today …. first kick at 3:00 PM EST

Bowl season continues with three bowls today including the Military, Belk and Holiday Bowls. Bowling Green and San Jose State kick things of at 3:00 PM EST in the Military Bowl in Washington D.C. The Spartans are -7.5 point favorites and the total has been bet down from 47 to 44. It will be mostly cloudy in the nation’s capital with gusty winds making the game time temperature of 42 feel like 33 with wind chill. The MAC has seven Bowl teams this year and are 1-2 with the losses by 26 and 21. San Jose State is 6-2 as a favorite this year but will play with an interim coach after MacIntyre took the Colorado job.

At 6:30 PM EST, Cincinnati takes on Duke at the Belk Bowl in Charlotte. The Bearcats opened up as 7 1/2 point favorites but have been bet up to 9 1/2. The total has headed north from 58 to 60 1/2 with a forecast of perfect weather. The Blue Devils limp into their first Bowl game in 18 years after losing four straight. Duke’s last Bowl win was in 1960. Cinncy HC Butch Jones jumped to Tennessee. Big East non-conference road favorites are just 2-6 this year. ACC non-conference road dogs are just 3-11. Pick your poison.

Tonight’s feature matchup should be a good one with Baylor and UCLA in the Holiday Bowl from San Diego. The Bruins are three-point favorites and the total has skyrocketed from 78 to 82. UCLA is close to home but hard to guage after beating arch rival USC then losing back-to-back to Stanford. Baylor was hot down the stretch including win over No.1 ranked (at the time) Kansas State. The Bears scored 50 points in two of their five losses. UCLA scored less than 24 points in all four of their losses. The last six Holiday Bowls have been decided by double-digits so history says the number means little here. The game kicks at 9:45 PM EST and temperature at game time is expected to be around 57 at Qualcomm.

Tim Tebow defends his character

Tim Tebow took the offensive Wednesday, criticizing critics that he quit on the Jets after not being named the starter after Mark Sanchez was benched. Tebow admitted meeting with coach Rex Ryan last week to voice his displeasure at being passed over as a starter but claims that he never said that he would not participate in the Jet’s wildcard package against the Chargers. MLB Hot Stove League

The Red Sox have acquired closer Joel Hanrahan in a six-player deal with the Pittsburg Pirates. In the deal, the Red Sox sent pitchers Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel, infielder Ivan De Jesus and first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands to Pittsburgh. Along with Hanrahan, the Red Sox received infielder Brock Holt. The 31-year-old Hanrahan is a year away from free agency. Over the past two seasons, the right-hander had 76 saves (84 chances), fourth most in the National League, and a 2.24 ERA. Last season, he was 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA and 36 saves.

Speaking of closers, former All-Star Ugueth Urbina has been released from a Venezuelan jail after serving 5 1/2 of a 14 year sentence for attempted murder. Urbona was convicted in 2007 of threatening workers with a machete and pouring gasoline on them on his ranch in his native Venezuela. Urbina is 30th on the all-time saves list with 237. He had two saves in the 2003 World Series for the victorious Marlins, who defeated the Yankees in six games. At just 38, bet he’ll have a tryout on a MLB roster this spring if he wants one.
