Charger’s big fourth quarter sinks the Chiefs

San Diego was anything but impressive but in the end, they did what they had to to stay alive in the AFC West race and probably save Norv Turner’s job. The Chargers capitalized on four Chief turnovers to cruise past Kansas City with a big 21-7 fourth quarter. Philip Rivers has an Alex Smith-like 18-20 for 220 effort with two scores but threw a key red zone pick that could have cost the Bolts the game. San Diego extended to 31-6 with two defensive touchdowns in the fourth quarter. A meaningless late Kansas City touchdown made the over players happy. The Chiefs have still not had a lead in regulation time this year and committed ten turnovers in their two losses to the Chargers this year.

Hurricanes cash Hokie mistakes in 30-12 win

Since Frank Beamer took over the helm at Virginia Tech, the Hokies have always been known for their great special teams ….. especially blocking kicks. Special teams was on of VTech’s many issues Thursday in Miami’s 30-12 win. The Hurricanes took advantage of a blocked punt and a long kickoff return to jump out to a 14-3 lead and were never headed. The Canes managed just three yards in 12 plays during the third quarter and finished the game 1-12 on third down but the visitors continuously shot themselves in the foot on offense with drops and terrible execution. The Hokies outgained Miami 129-36 in the first quarter where they had the ball 12:21 but still trailed by 11. Virginia Tech fell to 25-3 in their L28 November conference games. Miami controls it’s own destiny in the Coastal division of the ACC.

In other college football action on Thursday, Ohio rebounded from their first loss to crush Eastern Michigan 45-15 and Middle Tennessee State upset Western Kentucky 34-29 on the road. Bobcat QB Tyler Tettleton threw for three scores as Ohio blanked EMU 21-0 in the second half. The Blue Raiders used a 95-yard fourth quarter kickoff return to turn back WKU. MTSU is now second in the Sunbelt at 4-1 and Bowl eligible for the for the first time since 2010.

Just one game in tonight’s college football action where Washington travels to Cal in Pac-12 action. The Golden Bears are 4-point favorites with the high/low down a full tick to 51 1/2. The dog is 8-3 the L11 in the series but UWub is just 6-11 as a road dog under Sarkisian, 0-3 this year. Cal was 17-3 in it’s L20 as a home favorite through 2011 but are just 1-3 in their newly renovated Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is at 9:00 PM EST on ESPN2 under what should be perfect conditions in Berkley.

Parker’s cold-blooded jumpers sink the Thunder

Last night’s Knicks/Nets opener was postponed (rescheduled for Nov 26th) but there was still basketball in San Antonio on Thursday. Tony Parker’s trey with 28 seconds left tied it and his long deuce at the buzzer won it as the Spurs beat the Thunder 86-84 at the AT&T Center. Tim Duncan led the home team with 20 points and 8 boards. Parker finished with 14 points and 11 dimes. Kevin Durant had 23 and 14 for OKC, Russell Westbrook chipping in with 18 and 8. The first Friday of the NBA has 12 games on tap including Heat/Knicks and Clippers/Lakers.

Marlins hire former catcher Redmond as amanager

The Florida Marlins have hired former catcher Mike Redmond as their fifth manager since 2010. Redmond played 11 years with the bigs including seven with the Marlins and managed two years in the minors in the Toronto Blue Jay organization. Redmond was 155-115 in his two seasons managing AA ball and was Midwest League manager of the year in 2011. He got a three-year deal.

Former MLB pitcher Pascual Perez killed in home invasion

Former MLB pitcher Pascual Perez was killed Thursday in an apparent home robbery in his native Dominican Republic. Perez was found dead with a severe head wound and evidence at the scene suggested the killer/killers were searching for money. Perez, 55, played 11 seasons in the majors and compiled a lifetime record of 67-68 with the Braves, Pirates, Expos and Yankees. He was in and out of trouble for much of his career and served two drug related suspensions. RIP Pascual Perez.

Bochy’s Rolls Royce run out of gas on parade route

In yesteday’s SP3 daily recap, we featured a clip of the Giants victory parade. Here’s a funny out-take of the parade showing manager Bruce Bochy’s convertible Rolls Royce being pushed down the parade route. The car apparently had some type of engine trouble or ran out of gas.
