College Football News and Notes

Monday, the ACC lost Maryland to the Big Ten. Wednesday, the conference wasted no time in replacing the Terps with Louisville. The ACC presidents unanimously approved the move. The conference was also considering Cincinnati and UConn.

In other ACC news, the conference filed suit against Maryland in a North Carolina court to collect the conference’s entire $50 million dollar exit fee. The Terps were officially accepted in the Big Ten late last week.

The Big East will be adding Tulane and East Carolina into the conference in all sports starting in 2014. I don’t know about you but nothing says Big East like San Diego State vs East Carolina.

In conference realignment trickle down, Conference USA will take Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic out of the Sunbelt to compensate for the departure of Tulane and ECU.

NFL Football News and Notes

Andy Reid may be a dead coach walking but he’s going to go out on his own terms. Tuesday, the Eagles cut Pro-Bowl defensive lineman Jasin Babin who had 18 sacks last year for Philly. This year Babin had just 26 tackles and 5.5 sacks and was a known locker room lawyer. Babin had signed a five-year $27.7 million dollar deal after recording 12 sacks for Tennessee in 2010.

In other news out of Philadelphia, the Eagles leading wide receiver DeSean Jackson fractured two ribs in Monday night’s loss to Carolina and will likely be put in season-ending IR.

No.1 Hoosiers pound the No.14 Tar Heels 83-59

Indiana has been No.1 since the start of the season but have basically sleepwalked through the first six games of their season. Tuesday, the Hoosiers left no doubt who was college basketball’s top dog by demolishing No.14 North Carolina 83-59 in the ACC/Big Ten challenge. Cody Zeller had 20 points and 9 rebs for the winners who won the battle on the glass by 10 and held UNC to just 22 points in the second half. In other game of the “Challenge”, No.21 Minnesota beat Florida State 77-68, Virginia Tech thumped Iowa 95-79, No.3 Michigan downed No.18 North Carolina State 79-72, Maryland crushed Northwestern by 20 and Nebraska drilled Wake 79-63.

Pacers hold off Lakers 79-77 despite 40 from Kobe

Georg Hill’s layup with 0.1 seconds left on the clock led the Indiana Pacers to a 79-77 win over the Lakers. Hill’s high-arching shot off the glass barely eluded Dwight Howard. Hill finished the night with a 19-5-5 game line while David West added 16 points and 10 boards to the Indiana cause. Kobe Bryant had 40 points of the Lakers who were handcuffed by another terrible (24-76, 31%) shooting night. Los Angeles was no better from the foul line going 23-43 from the charity stripe “led” by Dwight Howard’s 3-12.

At the betting window, NBA dogs continue to bark going 4-1 last night, the under was 3-2. The NBA resumes tonight with a monster 11-game card that features the Nets at the Celtics, the Knicks at the Bucks and Jame Harden makes his first return to Oklahoma City since his preseason trade.

MLBPA leader Marvin Miller dead at 95

One of the most important non-players in baseball history died today in NYC, he was 95. Miller was the first full time union executive and from 1966 through 1983, the players union became one of the most powerful collective bargaining groups in the United States. Under Miller, players negotiated the first collective bargaining agreement in 1968. In 1970, Miller helped negotiate the players’ rights to arbitration in order to resolve grievances. Then, of course, there was the most important and long-lasting aspect of Miller’s tenure ….. free agency. Miller likened the reserve clause, which tied a player to the team holding his contract, as little more than 20th century slavery. You can read more on Miller, his life, and his accomplishments on his Wikipedia page.

Golf proposes ban on anchoring clubs

The powers that run golf are proposing rule changes that would effectively eliminate the belly putter. The proposal by the Royal and Ancient (R&A) and United States Golf Association (USGA), will be discussed by players and the golfing community before being implemented. The proposed rules change would take place on Jan. 1, 2016, in keeping with the four-year cycle for such amendments to the rules. Long putters and belly putters allow users to anchor the end of the club to their stomach or chest, acting as a base for the pendulum motion of the golf stroke.

“One of the most fundamental things about the game of golf is we believe the player should hold the club away from his body and swing it freely,” said Mike Davis, the executive director of the United States Golf Association. “We think this is integral to the traditions of the game. Golf is a game of skill and challenge, and we think that is an important part of it.”

“The player’s challenge is to control the movement of the entire club in striking the ball, and anchoring the club alters the nature of that challenge. Our conclusion is that the Rules of Golf should be amended to preserve the traditional character of the golf swing by eliminating the growing practice of anchoring the club.”

If a player were to anchor in match play, it would mean the loss of the hole. In stroke play, it’s a two-stroke penalty for each occurrence.

ESPN golf columnist Michael Collins comments on anchoring ban
