South Carolina and West Virginia fall, Irish OT goal-line stand

LSU, Kansas State, and Notre Dame were Saturday’s big winners while No.3 South Carolina and No.5 West Virginia were knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten. South Carolina lost to a desperate LSU team 23-21 in Baton Rouge. The Mounties and Heisman frontrunner Geno Smith were squashed 49-14 at Texas Tech as Red Raider QB Seth Dodge threw for 499 yards and six touchdowns. No.1 Alabama coasted to a 42-10 win over Missouri. No.6 Kansas State got a nice quality 27-21 road win at Iowa State. No.7 Notre Dame beat No.17 Stanford 20-13 in overtime. The Irish stopped the Cardinal three straight pops from the one for the win. SP3 will be a complete recap that will include a new AP Top 25 on Monday.

Giants/49ers, Packers/Texans highlight NFL Week VI action

Two must see game on the NFL late show this week as the Giants and 49ers reprise last year’s NFC Championship game in San Francisco. The 49ers are -6.5 point favorites, the total 46. Weather is expected to be perfect at Candlestick Park. The unbeaten Houston Texans make their Sunday night football debut when they entertain Green Bay. Houston opened as a four point favorite with the high/low 47. Both numbers have dropped half a tick to -3.5 and 46 1/2. Weather is not expected to be a factor. Reliant Stadium closes the roof in extreme heat so check. Temperature at game time is expected to be around 78. SP3 will recap all of Sunday’s action Monday and Tuesday.

Tigers win in extra innings, Jeter out of playoffs with a broken ankle

It was almost another epic comeback worthy of Yankee lore but in the end it was a 12-inning 6-4 loss in Game I of the ALCS that saw captain Derek Jeter lost for the rest of the playoffs with a broken ankle. Down 4-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Ichiro and Raul Iabanez connected for two-run homers off Detroit closer Jose Valverde to send the game to extra innings but …. the Tigers got two in the top of the 12th on an RBI double by Delmon Young and an infield single from Andy Dirks to get the win.

Most importantly in that critical 12th inning was Derek Jeter going to his left on a grounder and turning his left ankle. The Yankee captain went down in a heap and had to be helped off the field. X-rays later confirmed a fracture that will keep the future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer out of the rest on the playoffs.

Hideki Kuroda will toe the bump on three days rest and try to get the Bombers even in the best-of-seven ALCS. Kuroda is a -132 favorite over the Tigers Anabel Sanchez. The total is eight flat. The Cardinals and Giants open up their NLCS series with Madison Bumgarner a -130 home favorite over Lance Lynn and the Red Birds. The total is seven shaded 15 cents to the under.

UFC 153 results

As expected, Anderson Silva made quick work of Stephan Bonnar in the main event of UFC 153 in Rio. Fighting in front of his home fans, Silva got the finish with a brutal knee to the sternum followed by some ground and pound to get the stoppage at 4:40 of the first round. In the other pay-per-view events. “Big Nogg” Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira submitted Ed Herman with an armbar at 4:31 of the second. Glover Teixeira pounded Fabio Maldanado for 10 minutes before finally winning by TKO after a doctor’s stoppage. John Fitch and Phil Davis prevented a Brazilian sweep with wins. Fitch outclassed previously undefeated hotshot prospect Erick Silva by unanimous decision. “Mr Wonderful” won by submission over Wagner Prado with an anaconda choke.

Bowyer wins at Charlotte as Keslowski’s lead shrinks

In Saturday night’s Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, fuel strategy rather than surviving crashes ruled the day. Chase leader Brad Keselowski dominated the race leading 139 of the 334 laps but ran out of gas with 58 laps to go sending him a lap down. Keselowski battled back to finish 11th but ran out of time to challenge for the win. Clint Bowyer was able to hold off Denny Hamlin and Jimmy Johnson who had fuel issues of their own to get the win. Keselowki’s lead in the Cahse was cut in half to seven points over Johnson and 15 over Hamlin. Bowyer took over 4th place with the win and is 28 points back. Next up is race six of the ten race Chase, the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speeedway.
