Maryland punks Duke, Syracuse stops Hoyas in OT
In Friday’s major surprise, the Duke Blue Devils lost to Maryland 83-74 in the ACC tournament quarterfinals. It was the Dukies first loss with Ryan Kelly in the lineup. In the Big East semis, Syracuse got a small measure of revenge on Georgetown with a 58-55 overtime win. The loss pretty much killed any chance of the Hoyas hetting a top-seed. It will be interesting to see if Duke will remain on the top line.
Miami consecutive win run now at 21
Many had the the Miami on upset alert Friday night against a Milwaukee Buck team that had given the Heat all they wanted in splitting two meetings this year. But like the Knicks last weekend, Milwaukee was no match for the raging Heat who won their 21st straight game 107-4. Miami outscored the Bucks 58-41 in the middle two stanzas to cruise to the win. Lebron/DWafe/Bosh combined for 76/24/16 for Miami. Milwaukee big man Ersan Ilyasova had 26 points and 17 boards for Milwaukee.
Puerto Rico eliminates US at World Baseball Classic
The US rallied from 4-0 down late but still came up short is a 4-3 loss to Puerto Rico, eliminating the Americans from the World Baseball Classic. The Unites State still has not won or even reached the final in three WBCs. Puerto Rico will join Japan, the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic in San Francisco for the WBC final four.
NFL Free Agency News and Notes
Among the free agent signings on Friday …..
The Vikings signed former Green Bay Packer wide out Greg Jennings to a five-year $7.5 million dollar contract with $18 million guaranteed.
The Chargers inked ex-Patriot mighty might Danny Woodhead to a two-year contact. The 5’8″ Woodhead had 76 carries for 301 yards and four touchdowns while adding 40 receptions for 446 yards and three touchdowns for New England last year while participating in just 34% of the offensive snaps.
The Dolphins added another major weapon for Ryan Tannehill while putting a major lick to a division opponent when they pried TE Justin Keller away from the Jets. Keller sihned a one-year deal with the Fish for $4 million and change.
The Patriots added defensive help by signing safety Adrian Wilson away from Arizona. The big hitting Wilson was released after 12 years with the Cardinals and has 25 career interceptions. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
UFC 158 tonight in Montreal … GSP vs Nick Diaz
Two years in the making, GSP vs Nick Diaz is finally here in one of the biggest grudge matches in UFC history. Georges St. Pierre is a prohibitive -500 favorite with the ever dangerous Nick Diaz +350 on the take back.
