Virginia punks Duke as ranked teams continue to fall
Duke was the latest highly ranked team to get beat this week as the No.3 Blue Devils fell at Virginia 73-68. Joe Harris scored a career high 36 points for the 20-8 Cavs who now have that big win on their resume when it comes to selection Sunday in a little more than two weeks. No.2 Gonzaga survived a mild scare from BYU with a 65-60 road win and with Indiana, Duke. Michigan and Florida all losing, might be this week’s new number one.
Clippers cool off Pacers in Indy
Chris Paul scored 29 points and Blake Griffin added 18 points and 14 boards as the Clippers stopped the Indiana Pacers 99-91 at Canseco Field House. The Pacers played without center Ray Hibbert who was serving a one-game suspension for his pushing and shoving match with Golden State’s David Lee on Tuesday. With the 7-footer riding the pine, the Clippers outscored Indiana 50-32 in the paint.
The Heat does the Harlem Shake
The Blackhawks continue record run with 3-0 whitewash of the Blues
The Chicago Blackhawks went into St Louis on Friday night and shut out the Blues 3-0 to extend their NHL record streak of consecutive games to open up a season with at least one point. Chicago is 17-0-3 and yet to beat in regulation. Jonathon Toews had two goals for the winners while Marian Hossa chipped in with two assists. The victory was somewhat expensive however as starting goalie Corey Crawford left after the first period with a suspected concussion and did not return. Ray Emery stopped the final 15 shots in relief.
The NFL sets new salary cap at $123 million
NFL free agents got some good new on Thursday when the NFL announced that this year’s salary cap would be raised from last year’s $120.6 million to $123 million. While the $2.4 million dollar increase does not look like much, it works out to an additional $76.8 million for teams to add new players or resign the players they already have. Teams must be under the cap by the start of the new NFL fiscal year which starts on March 12th which is also the day that teams can begin to sign free agents.
New Pope betting has Bono at 1000/1
Action junkies that just can’t get enough might want to look into betting on the next Pope. Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Turkson and Italy’s Cardinal Angelo Scola were both listed as 3/1 favorites to become the next Pope. Turkson would become the first black Pope if he was to win. Another Italian, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, was coming in with the next shortest odds at 4/1 while Canada’s Cardinal Mark Ouellet, once a favorite, has dropped to 7/1 in the betting. Irish bookmaker giant Paddy Power is offering U2 frontman and humanitarian Bono 1000/1 odds. Not much value there we think.
