60 sign deals in first day of NHL free agency

It was a free agent feeding frenzy in the NHL on Friday, the first day of hockey free agency. Twenty of the league’s 30 teams were involved in signings or trades. Here are the highlights.

As mentioned on yesterday’s report, Daniel Alfredsson will make one last push for a Stanley Cup after signing a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. The 40-year-old Alfredsson has played the last 18 years in Ottawa where he scored 426 career goals.

The Sens wasted no time in replacing their ex-captain, acquiring sniper Bobby Ryan from the Ducks. Ryan was selected with the No. 2 pick by Anaheim in the 2005 draft. He has combined for 289 points (147 goals, 142 assists) in 378 career games.

Jerome Iginla has signed a one-year deal with the Boston Bruins worth $6 million. Iginla played most of his career in Calgary before moving to Pittsburg this year just before the trade deadline. Igilna had vetoed a trade to Boston before going to the Pens.

More deals on the Sunday and Monday reports.

Silva vs Weidman headline UFC 162

Chris Weidman will be the latest to take a shot at beating Anderson “The Spider” Silva. Weidman is given a real shot and the pick of most UFC fighters as a modest +200 underdog. Weidman has just nine fights but is considered a bigger and meaner Chael Sonnen who gave Silva fits twice. Silva is on a current 17 fight win streak and hasn’t lost since 2006 when he was disqualified for an illegal upkick. He last lost in the ring in 2004. In the co-feature, Frankie “The Truth” Edgar looks to get back on track as a -550 favorite over Charles Oliveira.
