No rust on Spurs, blow out Clippers

The Spurs had won 14 straight games, were 28-3 in their L31, coming off an easy sweep of the Utah Jazz but …. they hadn’t played in eight days. No problem. San Antonio battered the Clippers with body shots in the second period, went to the head in the third period, and then cruised to a 108-92 win over the road weary Clippers. “Mr Fundamental” Tim Duncan had 26 points and 10 rebounds while Manu Ginobli came of the bench to score 22. The Spurs are 29-2 at home vs the Clippers since drafting Duncan. Game Two is at the AT&T Center on Thursday.

They say that a series hasn’t begun until the road team wins. Well ….. Miami and Indiana is a series. Sunday the Heat held Indiana without a FG the final 4:51 to ice Game One. Tuesday, the Pacers held Miami scoreless the final 2:50 and then survived shoddy foul shooting to take Game Two 78-75. The Heat played without Chris Bosh but can only blame themselves for shooting just 35% from the field including 1-15 from downtown. Miami is now 1-22 from beyond the arc for the series.

In the NBA playoff tonight, the Celtics roll into Philadelphia with that series tied at one a piece. The 76ers are two point favorites and the total has held steady at 172. The first game of the TNT double-header tips at 7:00 pm EST. In the nightcap, the Lakers try Oklahoma City again after Monday’s Thunder 29-point blowout win over the Lake Show. Oklahoma City is an eight point home favorite and the total is 195 1/2. Don’t forget to check any of the SP3 sponsors to make sure you get the best of the number. Every half point DOES make a difference.

Coyotes implode in 4-0 home defeat

The Los Angeles Kings continued their rampage through the NHL playoffs improving to 10-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 on enemy ice. Jeff Carter turned the hat trick scoring twice on the power-play and Jonathon Quick pitched the shutout turning away 24 Phoenix shots. The Coyotes fell apart late in the second period taking two game misconducts for boarding including one to captain Shane Doan. Altogether, the Desert Dogs amassed 13 penalties for 56 minutes and now head to LA down two games to none.

Tonight, the Devils and Rangers resume their cross river rivalry at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers won Game One 3-0 after heading into the final period 0-0. The Rangers have gone 14 straight games scoring three or less goals and have gone 15 games without allowing an opponent more than three goals. New York is a -130 favorite with the total 4 1/2, the over -125. The Devils are just 2-6 in their L8 at the Mecca.

Second Clemens juror dismissed for sleeping

A second juror was dismissed today in the Roger Clemens trial for falling asleep during the trial. The dismissed juror, from Seat 1, was replaced by the juror in Seat 7, who had been the first alternate.

Brian McNamee continued his testimony at the trail stating that he’d injected Clemens many times and kept the medical waste fearing that he’d be the fall guy if Clemens was ever caught. McNamee kept a swab and cotton ball inside a beer can and then putting the can in a Fed Ex box which he stored in his basement and later his bedroom closet.

Interesting clip on overall scope of steroids in baseball.

76ers gain split with 82-81 win

Saturday, the Philadelphia 76ers led most of their Game One second-round matchup with Boston but couldn’t put the game away losing 92-91. Monday, they sealed the deal with six foul shots down the stretch to hold off the Celtics 82-81 and gain a split at TD Arena. Jrue Holiday led Philadelphia with 18 points, Ray Allen came of the bench to lead Boston with 17. The Celtics jumped out to a 9-0 lead and hit their first five shots from the field but managed just 28-79 the rest of the way. Philly’s last playoff game win in Boston was in 1982.

Oklahoma City was well rested and focused. The Lakers were road weary and playing a quick turnaround game. Both showed Monday as the Thunder put a 119-90 beatdown on the Lake Show. The game was never in doubt as the OKC led 30-23 after one quarter, 59-44 at the half, and 98-68 after three quarters. Russel Westbrook had 27/7/9 for the Thunder with “The Durantula” adding 25/8/4. Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bryant each had 20 for the Lakers.

There are two games in tonight’s NBA playoffs starting with Pacers/Heat Game Two in South Beach. Miami is a seven-point favorite with the total 185 1/2. Miami won Game One 95-86 holding Indiana without a field-goal in over the final 4:55 of the game. The game tips at 7:05 PM EST. Chris Bosh is out indefinitely for Miami with a lower abdominal strain. The Clippers and Spurs open up their Western Conference semifinal in Alamo City. San Antonio is an 11-point favorite and the total 190 1/2. San Antonio is currently on a 28-3 run and are well rested after waxing Utah in four straight games. The Clippers are banged up and off an emotional Game Seven win at Memphis less than 48 hours ago. LA will be prohibitive underdogs to pull out a win tonight.

Rangers draw first blood with 3-0 third period

The Devils and Rangers Game One went exactly as scripted, especially for the Rangers. Scoreless after 40 minutes, who would blink first. The Rangers took advantage of a disorganized line change and a Dan Girardi blast from the point beat Martin Brodeur for the winner of an eventual NYR 3-0 win. Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves including several tough chances for the shutout. This was the 14th straight game where the Rangers scored three goals or less and the 15th straight game of holding an opponent to less than three goals. Game Two is Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

Devils/Rangers Game One highlights

Tonight, the Kings are minus 135 road favorites at Phoenix, the total 4.5 with the over -130. Game One was a shooting gallery with the teams combining on 75 shots, 48 by the Kings. Los Angeles is now 9-1 in the playoffs including a perfect 6-0 on the road. Phoenix has won five of the last seven in the series at Jobing.com Arena.

Diamond dust, MLB fires arbitrator from Braun case

Major League Baseball management has fired Shyam Das, the arbitrator who overturned Ryan Braun’s drug suspension in February. MLB informed Das and the players’ association of its decision last week. Das had been baseball’s permanent arbitrator since 1999, part of what technically is a three-man panel that also includes a representative of management and labor. The sides will now try to select a successor. If they cannot agree, baseball’s collective bargaining agreement calls for them to ask the American Arbitration Association for a list of “prominent, professional arbitrators.” The sides would then alternate striking names from the list until one remains.

On the field, Matt Kemp’s league leading 399 consecutive game streaked was snapped as he sat out the Dodgers 3-1 win over the DBacks with a sore hammy. Kemp was put on the 15-day DL after the game. Kemp first suffered the hamstring injury on May 5 in Chicago, and since then he’s hit just .200/.304/.250 and hasn’t had a hit in his last four games. Sunday he left the game in the third inning after aggravating the injury while running to first.

Other than Josh Hamilton, two other players have been on big tears. Since being cut by the Tigers, Brandon Inge has resurrected his career in Oakland. Inge had a home run and four RBIs in four of five games including two games against his ex-mates. Mets third-baseman David Wright is on a six-game run off reach bases twice. He’s done son in 24 of 31 games this year and leads the majors with a .400 batting average.

London will likely be final Olympics for Coach K

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski says he thinks the London Olympics will be his last coaching Team USA. Coach K was brought in after the US finished a disappointing third in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In 2008, Krzyzewski led a team that included Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Dwayne Wade to gold in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Two years later, the USA won the Worlds with a different roster that was led by Kevin Durant. Should Coach K step down after London, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo will have to find a new coach for the 2014 Worlds and the 2016 Olympics in Brasil.

Clippers win Game Seven of the road

Winning Game Sevens on the road is not easy. In fact, before Sunday, road teams in NBA Game Sevens had won just 21 times in 108 tries. Make it 22 for 109. With Chris Paul and Blake Griffin battling nagging injuries, the Clipper bench stepped up to score 41 of the Clippers’ 82 points and grab 23 of the Clippers’ 46 rebounds. Most importantly, 25 of the Clippers 27 points in the final stanza came from the reserves. This was just the third playoff series win in Clipper franchise history and they’ll move on to face the Spurs.

Miami and Indiana opened up their Eastern Conference semifinal with Game One is South Beach. At the 4:55 mark of the fourth quarter, George Hill knocked down a three to cut the Heat lead to 86-85. The Pacers could manage only a foul shot the rest of the way in the Miami 95-86 win. Lebron James, who received his third MVP before the game, had 32/15/5 for the Heat. Dwayne Wade added 29 points as James/Wade scored 25 of the Heat’s last 27 points. Chris Bosh had 13 points in the first half but left with a lower abdominal strain and did not play the second half. He’s questionable for Game Two Tuesday in South Beach. The Heat opened -8.5 with the total 185 1/2.

Tonight, the Lakers open up at Oklahoma City. The Thunder are 7.5 point home faves with the total 191 1/2. OKC has not played since closing out the Dallas Mavericks back on May 5th and this is the first meeting between the two since the infamous World Peace elbow of Jame Harden April 22nd. The Celtics are -4.5 at home vs Philly in Game Two of that series. The total has not moved since opening at 174. First tip is at 7:05 PM EST.

Kings pepper Coyote goal in 4-2 win

With the Kings having allowed just 14 goals in nine playoff games and the Coyotes giving up just one goal in their last eight periods, you might have thought that Game One of the Western Conference final would have been a low-scoring defensive struggle. Think again. With both team having a week’s worth of fresh legs, Game One turned into a shooting gallery as the Kings won 4-2. Los Angeles unleashed 48 shots on Phoenix goalie Mike Smith but it took a Dwight King empty-netter at 19:12 to seal the deal for the visitors who are now a perfect 6-0 on the road in the playoffs.

The Devils and Rangers play Game one of the Eastern Conference finals tonight at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers are -150 with the total 4.5 and the over -125. The teams split six regular season games that were marred by line brawls and hundreds of minutes of penalties. The teams are separated by 30 minutes and eight miles and do not like each other. The matchup features a battle of goalies as New Jersey’s Hall of Fame-bound Martin Brodeur takes on New York’s Vezina finalist Henrik Lundqvist. The Rangers have scored three or less goals in 13 straight games and have allowed their opponents three or less goals in 14 straight games. Ten of the L11 Ranger games have been decided by one goal and the one that wasn’t was a 2-0 loss to Ottawa.

Two walk off grannies highlight Mother’s Day MLB action

Big things seem to happen on Mother’s Day in the MLB. In 2007, it was the Red Sox Mother’s Day Miracle win over Baltimore. In 2010 at was Dallas Braden’s perfect game in Oakland. Sunday it was two walk-off grand slams in the same day for the first time since 1998. In Cincinnati, $250 million dollar man Joey Votto beat the Nationals with a walk out granny. It was his third home run of the game. In Miami, Giancarlo Stanton big knock with the bases full keyed a six-run bottom of the ninth as the Marlins beat the Mets 8-4.

Kuchar takes Players Championship

For the last two year’s Matt Kuchar had been knocking on the door. Sunday, he kicked it in. Since 2010, Kuchar had racked up an incredible 24 top tens without getting a win. This week, Kuchar put it all together for four days to shoot a 13-under-par 275, good for a two-shot victory over Martin Laird, Zach Johnson, Rickie Fowler, and Ben Curtis. It was sweet redemption for the ex-Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket who suffered somewhat of a meltdown at the Masters. The Players Championship is generally considered golf’s “fifth major” and the richest event on tour. Kuchar took home a cool $1,710,000 for the win.

The Lakers led the Denver Nuggets by 16 in the third quarter and it looked like the Lake Show was on cruise control. Not so fast.
Kings/Coyotes open NHL conference finals today

If the Rangers are going to win their first Stanley Cup, they are going to have to do it with great defense, timely scoring, and unbelievable goaltending from Vezina Trophy finalist Henrik Lundqvist. New York beat Washington 2-1 in the seventh and deciding game of their Eastern Conference semi advancing to meet the Devils in the Eastern Conference finals. It was the 13th straight game where the Broadway Blues produced three or less goals. It was the 14 straight game that the Rangers have allowed their opponents three or less goals. The Rangers are now a perfect 5-0 in Game Sevens at Madison Square Garden. Game One against New Jersey is on Monday at 8:05 PM EST Monday.

The Kings and Coyotes open their NHL Western Conference final tonight in Phoenix. The Kings are -115 road favorite with a total of 4 1/2, the over -120. The series features two of the hottest goalies in the playoff. Los Angeles’ Jonathon Quick allowed just 14 goals in the Kings demolition of 1-2 seeds Vancouver and St Louis. The Coyotes netminder Mike Smith allowed just one goal in the final eight periods of the Desert Dogs semifinal series win over Nashville. Goals will be at a premium here. The puck drops at 8:05 PM EST.

Angels beat Rangers, Hamilton homers again

Josh Hamilton continued his raging start with his 18th home run in 34 games but the Angels rode a two-run blast from Mark Trumbo to a 4-2 win over the Rangers. The home run was Hamilton’s ninth home run in his last six games. Hamilton, who hit two homers Friday night after a four-homer game Tuesday in Baltimore, leads the majors with a .402 batting average, 18 homers and 41 RBI. Could we be looking at our first Triple Crown winner since Boston Red Sox left fielder Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown in 1967 ??? Yaz hit 326 with 44 home runs and 121 runs batted in. Frank Robinson won the Triple Crown the year before.

Team Hendricks gets elusive 200th win as Johnson takes Darlington

After almost four hours and 366 laps, it came down to a green-white-checker finish at the Bojangle’s Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Not knowing if he’d have enough gas to finish, Jimmie Johnson was fastest off the mark at the restart and cruised to his 56th career win. It was also the long waited 200th win for Hendrick racing. Denny Hamlin finished second with Tony Stewart third. Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Marcos Amrose, and Joey Lagano rounded out the tope ten.

In the standings, Greg Biffle leads with 411 points, two better than Matt Kenseth. Dale Earnhardt Jr, Denny Hamlin, and Johnson complete the top five.

Na leads Players after three rounds

Kevin Na has a one-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedre, Florida. Matt Kuchar will join Na in the final pairing. Rickie Fowler, Ben Curtis, and Zach Johnson are all with five shots. A developing story could be Na’s official warning for slow play. A second warning would bring a one-shot penalty that could affect the outcome of the tournament. Na is notorious for his slow play and is fighting a mental block where he finds it impossible to get comfortable getting set over his ball.
