Chicago, 3/9/10 – To the untrained ear, jazz music can seem a complicated endeavor. Highly skilled players improvising melodies, harmonies or time signatures at will. If they’re doing it right, you’ll never hear the same piece played the same way twice. Careful listening reveals a simple truth though – respect for the rhythm, as the elemental foundation underpinning each unique performance.

To the untrained eye, Jazz basketball can seem a boring affair. Head coach Jerry Sloan has presided for almost 21 years now, an eon compared to the eye-blink tenures most NBA head coaches experience. The players have changed, the uniforms have changed, but what the Jazz bring to the game – pick & roll offense and tough defensive - has remained the same. That framework however, provides for unlimited variation.

Discovered at the heart of the matter is the same basic principle – unite the players & you unlock their talent. It doesn’t always work, but when it does, the results are extraordinary. Just ask Chicago, who found themselves on the receiving end of a 132-108 Utah victory Tuesday night.

For several seasons now, Utah’s Deron Williams has been discussed as a top point guard currently playing. Williams showed exactly why he’s in that conversation, putting forth 28 points on frankly ridiculous 11 of 15 shooting. Further proving his case with 17 assists to one measly turnover, D-Will quarterbacked the Jazz to a win that boasted highs in points, assists, & three-point percentage by any Bulls opponent this season. Swingman C.J. Miles was the primary beneficiary of William’s generosity, considering he came in averaging 8.9 points & went out with 26 points. Like a good teammate, he gave credit where it was due:

”A couple of times, I was just standing,” Miles said. ”But most of the time, I was sliding up and down. They have to pay attention to Deron when he’s penetrating. It’s Deron Williams.”

To Miles’s credit though, he shot the lights out. Six of seven from beyond the arc, nine of twelve overall – and all done in just 19 short minutes. Efficiency like that is why the Jazz have chalked up nine road wins in their last eleven games and are a single win behind Denver to lead the Northwestern Division.

Since his rookie season (last year actually) Chicago’s Derrick Rose has been tipped as the next top point guard in the NBA. Rose showed why in the Bull’s first round playoff series against the Celtics last year, but has struggled this season. Perhaps carrying more of the scoring load after Ben Gordon’s departure or increased defensive attention by opponents has limited his effectiveness, but against the Jazz, he earned Williams’s respect.

”I always have fun competing against the best,” Williams said. ”That’s my job and I enjoy it.”

Finishing the contest with 25 points and tying his career high of 13 assists, Rose also managed four rebounds. Expressing mutual respect for Williams, Rose made certain future match-ups between the two will be worth watching:

”He’s always someone I looked up to and I thought he played real well tonight,” Rose said.

Despite 20 points from Bulls center Brad Miller to complement Rose’s scoring though, Chicago dropped their fifth straight for the second time this season. Small forward Luol Deng added 14 points, but missed the entire fourth quarter after straining his right calf muscle.

Their recent surge in the Western Conference rankings in mind, the Jazz picked the right time to being peaking. As the champion Lakers falter & the revamped Maverick’s double-digits win streak draws attention, Utah could emerge as the team nobody wants to face for five or seven games. Long, strong, defensively tough, & “in tune”, the Jazz could be making their beautiful music deep into the playoffs.

Philadelphia, 2/13/10 – Perhaps their coach inspired them pre-game with a surprise reading of The Little Engine That Could, or maybe Villanova was sleepwalking for most of the night. Either way, Providence, who count victories against UConn & Rutgers amongst their 12 wins (12-13 so far this campaign) showed they can play the David role to another’s team Goliath, at least to a certain point. That point was eight minutes left in the game, after which ‘Nova woke up/cut story time short, & finished strong to win 92-81.

Despite a laudable 22-2 overall record, Villanova has been slouching toward bad habits in their last several games. Bolstered by talented guard Scottie Reynolds, the Wildcats have evinced a sloppy style of play, frequently letting less than able competition hang around, when a good team would just be putting them down for the count with vigor. Even their coach admits as much.

”I don’t want it to always be, Scottie will get us going,” coach Jay Wright said. ”But I’m glad we have that. That’s something I always have in the back of my mind.”

As per usual, Reynolds did not disappoint. It was his play, around that eight minutes left mark, that sealed the game for the ‘Cats. Reynolds went strong to the basket & mixed things up with Friars player Sharaud Curry, who took exception to the situation. Assessed a personal foul for the tangle with Reynolds & a technical foul for his subsequent jawing at the refs, Curry fouled out. Reynolds then hit three of the four shots he was awarded, keying a Villanova run on his way to 22 points. Joining him in leading the charge were Corey Fisher - also notching 22, and Antonio Pena, who turned in a dominating performance from the forward’s position, with 15 points, 12 boards, & 2 blocks.

The Fri-guys played hard, but ultimately aren’t built to contend against a team that will probably go deep into March’s Tournament. The aforementioned Curry put in 19 points, but maybe cost his team the win with his hot-tempered reaction. Providence coach Keno Davis disagreed.

“The explanation I got for the technical foul was, he said, ‘Where’s the foul?”’ coach Keno Davis said.” He put his arms somewhat up. It’s about as demonstrative as Curry has ever been and that’s not very demonstrative.”

Jamine Peterson, who’s been a bright light for Providence all year, scored 19 as well. The true surprise was Vincent Council, who more than doubled his season average of 9.5/per game to 21 points against the Wildcats.

With Villanova facing more Tournament ready opposition soon, you would hope this match would serve to shock them from recent complacency. However, sometimes the problem with being good – or really good, as any team with two losses could be considered – is to be contemptuous of your competition, usually to your own peril.

Miami, 2/9/10 – As the Rockets went crashing earthwards in the vicinity of South Beach, they could take heart in being beaten & battered before the Heat pummeled them for a 33-point victory. After all, Miami was rabid to break a five game slump & get their mojo back. Putting forth a stellar effort that saw six players score in double figures, the Heat got what they needed, blowing out Houston 99-66 to the delight of hometown fans.

Despite starting a season sans 7’6” center Yao Ming (broken foot) & minus franchise goldbricker Tracey McGrady (take your pick, chronic poor attitude mostly) the Rockets have flown higher & farther than many expected. Wily coach Rick Adelman has forged a strong, team-first group playing as more than the sum of its parts. Perspective-wise, while their record (27-24) makes for ninth place in a beastly Western Conference, in LEastern Conference terms that’s a game ahead of Charlotte (26-25) for the sixth spot.

For the 26-27 Heat then, a depleted Rockets were perfect prey for them. Dwayne Wade stuffed his staff sheet, notching 17 points, 7 dimes, 5 steals, & 4 rebounds – in barely 29 minutes of game time. Five other Heat players got in on the act, with Udonis Haslem in particular standing out with his own 14 points & 14 boards. Considering the Heat could suit up a whole entire extra player if need be though, predicting victory wasn’t exactly rocket science.

“We caught a Houston team that was a little beat up, and that certainly was a factor,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Missing both swingman Trevor Ariza & point guard Kyle Lowry in addition to the aforementioned Ming & McGrady, Houston was simply overmatched. Down 56-31 by halftime, the Rockets ended shooting only 30% from the field. Lead by Luis Scola’s 12 points, Space City’s squad also suffered a lackluster showing by guard Aaron Brooks, whose 10 points (season average 19.4) & 1 assist (4.9 usually) helped seal their fate.

Regardless of circumstances, Miami should take heart in their big night. A win like this always feels good on your home court, even if your fans are leaving early on account of lopsided win. With their next five games on the road, Miami needed a confidence booster. Houston find themselves in a limbo kind of place. Ming is back next season, but speedy recovery from an injury referred to as “career threatening” will be difficult. McGrady probably won’t be in a Rockets uniform much longer – all the better for a Rockets team happy to be rid of his baleful influence & monster contract.
