Winston is spectacular in Seminole debut

Highly touted red-shirt freshman Jameis Winston was nearly flawless in his Florida State debut as the Seminoles ripped Pitt 41-13. Winston was 25 of 27 for 356 yards and 4 touchdowns and ran for another. “Famous Jameis” completed his first eight passes and his 94% completion percentage was a school record. Making the performance more impressive was that Pittsburg returned nine starters from a unit that was top 25 in total defense last year.

RG III and Terrelle Pryor named Week I starters

To the surprise of nobody, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has named Robert Griffin III as his starting quarterback in their opener against the Eagles. Griffin was cleared to play last week after missing the entire preseason rehabbing his knee from surgery after last year’s playoffs.

In somewhat of a surprise, Terrelle Pryor has been named the starting quarterback of the Oakland Raiders. Pryor beat out Matt Flynn who lost his quarterback competition to Russel Wilson in Seattle last year. The former Buckeye earned the job primarily on his Week III performance against the Bears where he went 7-9 with 2 TDs against Chicago reserves.

MLB News and Notes

The Oakland A’s have reclaimed a piece of the lead in the A.L. West after dropping the Texas Rangers 4-2 for their fourth straight win.

The Pittsburg Pirates reclaimed the lead in the N.L. Central by beating Milwaukee 5-2 while St Louis was getting hammered 7-2 at Cincinnati.

Miguel Cabrera took batting practice on Monday and could resume his pursuit of B2B Triple Crowns any day. Cabrera has missed three straight games with a nagging abdominal strain and a sore hip.

Former heavyweight champ Tommy Morrison dead at 44

Former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison passed in an Omaha, Nebraska hospital on Sunday night. He was 44. No cause of death was given but Morrison had tested positive for HIV as early as 1996 effectively ending his boxing career. Morrison denied having HIV his entire life claiming that he had Guillain-Barre Syndrome which produced a false positive. Morrison won the WBO title in 1993 by winning a unanimous decision over George Foreman. Morrison also starred along Sylvester Stallone in Rocky V playing protege Tommy Gunn.

Stenson wins Deutsche Bank and takes over Fed Ex lead

Henrik Stenson fired a final round 66 on Monday to win the Deutsche Bank Championship by two shots over Steve Stricker. Stenson tied the tournament record at 22-under for the event. Stenson is on a white-hot form spree having finished second at the British Open, T2 at the Bridgestone Invitational, and third at the PGA Championship.

The fifth time was the charm. Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Nyad completed the 110 mile swim from Havana to Key West in a little more than 53 hours.
