Florida Gulf Coast is first 15th seed to reach Sweet Sixteen
Florida Gulf Coast used a 17-0 second half run to clobber San Diego State 81-71 on Sunday in a game not as close as the final score. The Aztecs led by one at the half, the first time FGCU had trailed after 20 minutes in 22 games. The Eagles came out flying in the second half and the game was decided with FGC up 71-52 with a little over four minutes to play. Gulf Coast moves on to meet No.3 Florida on Friday. The Gators opened as 12.5 point favorites with total 131.
Howland fired at UCLA, Bennett first to declare Pro
In college hoops new other than the tournament, UCLA is looking for a new head basketball coach and the first college hoopster is reportedly ready to announce for the draft. Ben Howland was fired at UCLA after a ten-year reign. UCLA went 233-107 under Howland including three-straight Final Four appearances between 2006-2008. The Bruins will eat a reported $3.5 million to buy out Howlands five remaining years and and will target VCU’s Shaka Smart and Butler’s Brad Stevens as possible replacements.
UNLV’s Anthony Bennett will reportedly making an announcement this week that he is one and done and headed for the NBA draft. Betting averaged 16 points and eight rebounds as a freshman for the Rebels. The 6’8″ shooting forward will likely be a lottery pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

The Miami Heat crushed the Charlotte Bobcats 109-77 behind Lebron James 32-20-8. Miami closed the first quarter on a 15-0 run, led by eight at the half and were never threatened thereafter. Miami played without Dwayne Wade who rest a sore right knee. The Heat are now just seven games behind the 1972-73 Lakers streak of 33 straight wins as the longest in NBA history. The major road bloack will be Game 30 in San Antonio.
Kyle Busch wins wild one at Fontana
Kyle Busch passes Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano on the final lap to win the Auto Club 400 sprint car race in Fontana. Dale Earnhardt Jr finished second with Loagano, Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch rounding out the top five. It was a driving double for Busch who also won the Nationwide event on Saturday. Dumervil gets a five-year deal with the Ravens
Former Denver Bronco pass-rushiung linebacker Elvis Dumervil has landed in Baltimore with a five-year $41 million dollar deal. Dumervil has been in the news the last ten days after was cut by the Broncos after agreeing to a pay cut but unable to get the proper paper work filed with the league on time. Dumervil’s deal is almost identical to the deal that Cleveland gave Paul Kruger to leave the Ravens so essentially, the Ravens swapped Kruger for Dumervil.
Storm delays Tiger bid for 8th Bay Hill title
A storm postponed the final round of the Arnild Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill to Monday but it still looks like Tiger Woods will take home the hardware for a record eighth time. Woods stated the day with a two shot lead and at this writing (12:00 PM EST on Monday), Tiger had a three-shot lead over Justin Rose and Ricky Fowler through the first 11 holes.
FIFA receives official Costa Rican protest requesting replay
Saturday we reported on the USA’s Friday night 1-0 win over Costa Rica, played in a bizzard in Commerce City, Colorado. The Match was stopped in the 55th minute where the referee consulted with the match judge who ruled to play on despite none of the markings on the field being visible. The Ticos have filed an official protest requesting a replay and disciplinary action against the match officials for allowing play to continue. FIFA is analyzing the protest and will rule in due course.
