Giants win second World Championship in three years

The San Francisco Giants are the World series Champions for the second time in three years after completing a sweep of the Detroit Tigers after Sunday’s 4-3 victory in 10-innings. The Giants scored first on a Brandon Belt triple before a Miguel Cabrera two-run blast in the third gave Detroit it’s first and only lead in the 2012 World Series. Buster Posey’s two-run dinger in the sixth gave the lead back to San Fran at 3-2 but Delmon Young evened things with an opposite field solo shot in the bottom of the inning. In the decisive 10th, Giant DH Ryan Theriot singled to lead off the inning. Brandon Crawford sacrificed Theriot to second who then scored on a Marco Scutaro single. Sergio Romo struck out the side to to to end the series. Pablo Sandoval was named the series MVP after going 8-for-15 including his epic three-home-run game in the series opener.

Falcons move to 7-0, Giants stop Cowboys, Broncos drill Saints

Philadelphia’s Andy Reid is the longest tenured coach in the NFL, now in his 14th year. In the previous 13 years, the Eagles were 13-0 (10-3 ATS) coming out of their bye week. After getting drubbed by the Falcons 30-17 on Sunday, Philly is now 13-1 coming out of the bye as the struggling Eagles fell to 3-4. It was a blowout from the start as the Dirty Birds raced out to a 24-7 lead and never looked back. Native son Matt Ryan was 22-29 for 262 and three touchdowns. Julio Jones had five grabs for 123 yards and a score for the winners. In Sunday’s other key matchups, the New York football Giants blew a 23-0 lead but survived a furious Dallas rally to beat the Cowboys 29-24. In the NBC Sunday night finale, the Broncos crushed the Saints 34-14 as the Denver defense completely locked up Drew Brees and Co while Peyton Manning threw for 300+ yards for the fifth straight week.

At the betting window, the underdogs and the over once again won the week. Including Bucs/Vikes on Thursday night, the dogs were 8-5 for the week, the over 6-5-2 with the pushes coming in the Dolphin/Jets and Raider/Chief games. Obviously, your number may have been different depending on when and where you bet once again highlighting the importance of multiple outs. Home teams were 6-6 and of course the Patriots blew out the Rams 45-7 on a neutral field in London.

Tonight on ESPN, the 49ers travel to the desert to face Arizona in a key NFC West tilt. San Francisco opened as a -6 point favorite with the total 37. The 4pers are now a full touchdown at -7 and the total has risen to 38 1/2. The Cardinals have lost three straight since opening up at 4-0 and have scored just three touchdowns in their last 38 drives. San Francisco has won five of the last six in the series but NFC West road favorites are 0-3 so far in 2012. Weather will be perfect with temperature at game time expected around 82.

Johnson wins Martinsville to capture lead in the Chase

Jimmie Johnson knew that Martinsville would be pivotal in his pursuit for his sixth Sprint Cup championship and it was. Johnson won for the seventh time in his career at Martinsville and took over as points leader of the Chase with three races to go. Johnson held off Kyle Bush and Kasey Kahne to take the checkered flag and erase a seven point defit to forge two points ahead of previous leader Brad Keselowski who finished sixth. Next up is the AAA Texas 500 in Dallas before Phoenix and Homestead complete the Chase.

Lattimore may redshirt and return in 2014

Good news for South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore. The knee injury he sustained in the Gamecocks 38-35 victory over Tennessee might not be career threatening. Lattimore dislocated his knee from a high/low hit in the second quarter and the replay below shows his dangling leg slam into the turf. Doctor’s were able to put the knee back in place in the hospital and the knee will be re-evaluated for tendon and ligament damage late this week. The injury while significant, is not thought tho be career ending although Lattimore may need more than one off-season to recover. Lattimore tuns 21 today. SP3 wishes Marcus Lattimore the best and for a complete and speedy recovery.

Marcus Lattimore’s terrible knee injury. Could be disturbing to some.

Harden to sign long-term deal with the Rockets

Just two days after being traded to Houston, reigning Sixth Man of the Year James Harden says that he will sign a long-term deal with the Rockets before the season starts. Harden joined his new team Sunday after being dealt from Oklahoma City. The Thunder acquired guards Kevin Martin and Jeremy Lamb, two first-round picks and a second-round pick in the surprising deal. Oklahoma City also sent center Cole Aldrich and forwards Daequan Cook and Lazar Hayward to Houston. The third-year man out of Arizona State will assume a new role on Houston where he will be one of the centerpieces of a rebuilding franchise that traded or released every veteran on last year’s roster after the Rockets missed the playoffs for the third straight year.
