Joey Chestnut wins 7th Nathan’s hot dog eating contest
Earlier today, competitive eating champion Joe Chestnut shattered his own world record by scarfing down 69 Nathan’s hot dogs with buns in 10 minutes to win his seventh Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. The man known as “Jaws” took home $10,000 and a mustard-yellow champion’s belt. Matt “Megatoad” Stonie with 51 hot dogs.Watch Chestnut in action by clicking here.
Chestnut is clearly the Michael Jordan/Tiger Woods of competitive eating holding world records for tamale eating, pastrami eating, ice cream eating and rib eating, among others.
Brad Stevens jumps Butler for Celtics
Former Butler head coach Brad Stevens has been hired to coach the Boston Celtics. Stevens signed a six-year deal worth a reported $22 million dollars and replaces Doc Rivers who has moved on to the Los Angeles Clippers. The highly respected Stevens will now face the complete rebuilding of the Celtics who basically have Rajon Rondo, Jeff Green, a group of journeymen and several late first round draft picks. It will be interesting to see the dynamic between Stevens and Rondo.
Bruins and Stars pull off multi-player mega-trade
The Boston Bruins have moved the second player chosen in the 2010 draft sending Tyler Seguin to the Dallas Stars in a multi-player deal. The whole trade is Seguin, Rich Peverley, and Ryan Button to Dallas for Eriksson, Joe Morrow, Reilly Smith, and Matt Fraser. This is clearly a cap relied move as Seguin begins the first year of a six-year $34 million dollar deal. The 21-year-old scored 29 goals in 2011-2012.
MLB News and Notes
The Tigers Max Scherzer improved to 13-0 Wednesday throwing 6 1/3 innings of two-run eight strikeout ball in Detroit’s 6-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Scherzer joins Dave McNally, 15-0 (1969), Johnny Allen, 15-0 (1937), and RogerClemens, 14-0 (1986) for the best starts by a pitcher in MLB history.
Manny Ramirez (now 41) has signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. Ramirez has most recently been playing in Taiwan. Ramirez hasn’t played in the MLB since 2011 when he had a cup of coffee with Tampa Bay before being suspended 100 game for a second infraction for PEDs.
