Heat roll, Tiger wins and regains No.1, Tubby out, Hamlin hurt + Monday Recap: Tuesday, March 26, 2013
- Updated: March 26, 2013
Heat cruise past Magic for 27th straight
The Miami Heat put down a brief Orlando Magic third quarter rally to cruise to their 27th straight win, 108-94. The Magic cut a nine-point halftime deficit to three at 68-65 but a 7-o Heat run sealed the deal as Miami was not threatened the rest of the way. It was just another 27-9-11 night at the office for Lebron James. Mario Chalmers helped the cause with 17 points. Dwayne Wade missed his second straight game nursing a sore left knee.
The Denver Nuggets saw their franchise record 15-game win streak come to an end when they were pounded 110-86 at New Orleans. The Hornets led 27-18 at the quarter and 59-38 at the half and never looked back. Ryan Anderson came off the bench to lead the soon to be Pelicans with 23 points. Danilo Galinari had 24 in a losing cause for Denver.
Tiger wins eighth Bay Hill, regains world No.1 ranking
It took an extra day, but Tiger Woods finally finished off his eighth win at Bay Hill and regain his world No.1 ranking for the first time since 2010. Woods shot a two-under 70 on Monday to finish the tournament two shots clear of Justin Rose with a 13-under 275. Ricky Fowler was threatening before making triple-bogey on the 18th hole.
Tubby Smith fired at Minnesota
One day after getting spanked by Florida in the Round of 32, the Minnesota Golden Gophers decided to part ways with head coach Tubby Smith. Smith was 124-81 (.610) in six seasons at Minnesota, helping to bring the program back to respectability and ramping up expectations for a team hit hard by an academic cheating scandal. Smith won 20 games five times. But he went just 46-62 in Big Ten play and never finished higher than sixth in the conference. The Gophers made three NCAA tournament appearances under Smith. While Smith have his shortcomings as a game coach, SB3 is not sure who will do a better job getting kids to play at Minnesota. Time will tell. Tubby is one of those coaches that won’t be unemployed long.
Hamlin has compression fracture in his back
In yesterday’s report, we posted the clip of the wild finish of Sunday’s Nascar race at Fontana which featured a final lap wreck involving Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano. Hamlin was airlifted to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a compression fracture of his first lumbar vertebrae. Hamlin was released on Monday and will fly to Charlotte for further evaluation. His prognosis in unclear at this point and his status for the next Sprint Cup race (Martinsville, April 7th) is uncertain. If the fracture turns out to be minor, Hamlin might just require padding and tough it out. All reports indicate that driving under pain medication is not an option.
Lohse signs three-year deal with the Brewers
Kyle Lohse and the Milwaukee Brewers have come to terms on a three-year $33 million dollar deal. The move helps bolster a shaky Brewer starting rotation just a week before the start of the MLB regular season. Lohse is off a career season that saw him go 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA with the Cardinals but drew just limited interest in free agency after getting tagged with a qualifying offer from St Louis that would have had potential suitors give up a first-round draft pick as compensation for signing him.
