Heat smoke Pacers, Mets sweep Yanks, Rangers fire Tortorella, Tiger six back at Memorial, Belmont Stakes update + Thursday Recap: Friday, May 31, 2013
- Updated: May 31, 2013
Big third quarter propels Heat over Pacers
The Miami heat used a 30-13 third quarter to beat down the Indiana Pacers 90-79 and take a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference Finals series. Teams that win the pivotal Game Five in a series tied 2-2 have gone on to win 54 of the last 65 series. Indiana led 44-40 at the half but it should have been much more as the Pacers missed several layups and gimmes. After getting dressed down by Lebron at the half, the heat came out focused and with a sense of purpose scoring the first seven points of the half. Lebron outscored the Pacers himself in the third quarter 16-13. Miami can clinch a date with the Spurs in the NBA finals with a win at Indiana on Staurday.
CP3 unhappy with Clippers over perception of Del Negro firing
Chris Paul is unhappy with the Clippers for giving the perception that he was the reason for the firing of HC Vinnie Del Negro. Paul was said to not be a fan of Del Negro and the move was apparently made to appease Paul who is an un-restricted free agent. Del Negro was fired after leading the Clips to a franchise record 56 regular season wins and their first ever Pacific Division title.
The Sacramento Kings name Mike Malone new HC
The Sacramento Kings have tabbed Golden State assistant Mike Malone as their new head coach. Since firing Rick Adelman in 2006, the franchise has compiled a horrendous record of 187-371 over seven seasons. They’ve gone five coaches and failed to win more than 33 games in any of those seven seasons, missing the playoffs each year.
Mets beat Yankees 3-1 to sweep the Subway Series
Dillon Gee had a career-high 12 strike outs and Marlon Byrd chipped in with a tape-measure two-run homer to lead the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Yankees and their first ever “Subway Series” sweep of the Bronx Bombers. Gee went 7 1/3 to pick up the win. The Yankees have lost five straight for the first time in to years.
The New York Rangers fire John Tortorella after five-year run
The New York Rangers have fired acid-tongued head coach John Tortorella after five years with the Broadway Blues. The Rangers made the playoffs every year under Tortorella but could never get out of the East with their limited offense. New York went out in the Eastern semis losing to Boston four games to one. Tortorella led the Rangers to 171 regulae season wins and 19 playoff wins. Possible replacements include Dave Tippett (if available), Lindy Ruff, Alain Vigneault, Paul Maurice and Mark Messier.
Schwartzel leads Memorial, Tiger six back
Charl Schwartzel’s 7-under-par 65 was good enough for a one-shot lead over Scott Piercy after one round of the Memorial at Dublin, Ohio. There are 26 golfers within five shots of the lead including notables Matt Kuchar (68) and Justin Rose (70). Tiger Wood couldn’t get the putter going settling for a first round 71.
