Ichiro gets hit No.4000
Ichiro Suzuki’s first inning single in the Yankees 4-2 win over Toronto on Wednesday was the 4000th hit of his career. The Japanese superstar has 2722 hits in his 13-year US career, the most by any MLB player over that time period. The hit also vaulted Ichiro into 59th place on the all-time hit list passing Lou Gehrig. Ichiro joins Pete Rose (4253) and Ty Cobb (4191) as the lone members of the 4000 hit club.
MLB News and Notes
The Atlanta Braves took a big hit literally and figuratively after losing outfielder Jason Heyward 4-6 weeks with a broken jaw. Heyward was hit in the face by a 90-mph fastball Wednesday and will require surgery. Heyward is an excellent defensive player that was hitting .254 with 13 homers in 94 games. He missed three weeks earlier in the year with appendicitis. The beaning by Met’s pitcher Jonathon Niese was unintentional and you can watch it by clicking here.
Pats/Lions and Panthers/Ravens start NFL “go” week
Week three of the NFLX is traditionally “go” week or the dress reheasal. Starters generally play a minimum of a half or into the third quarter before taking off next week in preperation for the start of the season. Two games on Thursday with New England at Detroit and Carolina at Baltimore. The Lions are currently -2.5 with the total steady at 46. The game is indoors so weather is not a factor. The Ravens are down a half tick to -3 with the high/low also down a half-point to 42. Weather will be mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers. The game time temp is expected too be around 82.
Sean Lee gets $42 million dollar extension
The Dallas Cowboys have locked up linebacker Sean Lee through 2019 with a six-year $42 million dollar deal, $15 of which is guaranteed. Lee was a second-round pick out of Penn State in 2010 and is one of the league’s impact inside linebackers. He was the leading tackler for Dallas last year through six games before going on IR after toe surgery.
No more “practice” for Allen Iverson
He hasn’t played in the NBA since 2010 or professionally since 2011 but one of the great warriors in ALL recent sports history has finally hung it. Iverson’s career should absolutely end with a Hall of Fame induction, as the 11-time All-Star finished with career averages of 26.7 points, 6.2 assists and 2.2 steals. Iverson played in 71 career postseason games, appeared in the NBA Finals once, and won MVP in 2001.
Standing just six feet, Iverson was known as a fierce competitor who routinely drove the ball to the rim and drawing contact from much bigger players. He rarely if ever missed games despite numerous nagging entries. Sadly, Iverson will likely be remembered for one of the great sound bites in sports history.
The Clipper’s Chris Paul will head NBAPA
Chris Paul is the new NBAPA president becoming the most high profile player to lead the union since Patrick Ewing in 2001. Paul takes over a union rife with lack of direction and scandal. His biggest immediate job will be to find a replacement for recently terminated Executive Director Billy Hunter, PED testing and setting a minimum age that players can enter the NBA draft.
Maria Sharapova out of Open with shoulder bursitis
A week after firing new coach Jimmy Connors after one match and causing a stir by trying to legally change her name to Sugar-pova to promote he new candy line for the US Open, Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the final Grand Slam event with nagging shoulder bursitis. Sharapova won the tournament in 2006 and was seeded third this year. She is currently ranked No.3 in the world.
