Jerry Buss dead at 80, Notre Dame downs Pitt + Monday Recap: Tuesday, February 19th, 2013
- Updated: February 19, 2013
Longtime Laker owner Jerry Buss dead at 80
Jerry Buss, the longtime owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, passed Monday from cancer. Buss earned a Ph.D. in chemistry at age 24 and had careers in aerospace and real estate development before getting into sports. With money from his real-estate ventures and a good bit of creative accounting, Buss bought the then-struggling Lakers, the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and both clubs’ arena … the Forum … from Jack Kent Cooke in a $67.5 million deal that was the largest sports transaction in history at the time. Few owners in sports history can approach Buss’ accomplishments with the Lakers, who made the NBA finals 16 times through 2011 during his nearly 34 years in charge, winning 10 titles between 1980 and 2010.
SB3 will have more on the death of doctor Buss on the Wednesday report.
Down 19-3 off the git, Notre Dame roars back
In big Monday college basketball action, Notre Dame spotted Pittsburg a 19-3 lead before roaring back for a 51-42 win. The Irish trailed by 16 at the 7:08 mark of the half after HC Mike Brey got called for a technical foul. The well timed “T” woke up the Irish who were able to whittle down the deficit to 22-19 at the half. The final 20 minutes was all Irish who rebounded on a short turnaround after a bad loss at Providence.
The NBA resumes with a nine game card tonight
“The Association” resumes tonight from it’s All-Star break with a nine-game Tuesday card. In early action, the Brooklyn are -4.5 when they host the Bucks at the Barclay Center. The total is 195. Arguable the best matchup of the night has the Celtics traveling to Denver to face the Nuggets. Boston catches 8.5 points and the high/low has been bet up a point to 203. Phoenix at Portland and San Antonio at Sacramento close the show on the west coast.
Griner gets 3000 point as No.1 Baylor beats No.3 UConn in lady hoops
Two women’s basketball powerhouses met on Monday when Baylor took on the UConn at Stoors. The Huskies led most of the first 30 minutes but in the end Baylor and Brittney Griner were just too much. Griner, the most dominant player in women’s college basketball the past two years, scored 25 points and added nine rebounds in the 76-70 Bear win. UConn gave the top-ranked Bears all they wanted and this just might have been a preview of the ladies National Championship game.

Dice Flavor and Super Ninety Nine win Derby Preps
Thoroughbred horse racing is starting to heat up over the weekend with two graded Kentucky Derby prep races. At the Grade III El Camino Royale at Golden Gate, Dice Flavor came from off the pace to circle the tired ones and then split traffic to win. In the Grade III Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn, Super Ninety Nine set a leisurely pace on the front end and then drew off to an easy 11 length win as the even money favorite. Not sure what you can take away from the Southwest as their was a large downpour of rain just 30 minutes before post and several of the better horses failed to fire. SP3 will be tracking the Road to the Kentucky Derby weekly.
