Lakers win 5th straight, Heat outlast Thunder, Clippers roll to 14th straight over Denver
It was all NBA all Christmas Day as “The Association” celebrated with a quintuple header. In the opener, Boston beat New Jersey 93-76 in a chippy game at the Barley Center. Former Ohio State Buckeye Jared Sullinger led the way with 16 points and 7 boards. In Game II, the Lakers came back from down eight late to beat the Knicks 100-94. Kobe Bryant had 34 for the Lakers, his ninth straight game with 30+ points. Carmelo Anthony had 34 for the Knicks. In a rematch of last year’s NBA final, the Miami Heat dispatched Oklahoma City 103-97. Kevin Durant won the battle with 33-7-3 but Lebron won the war with 33-8-9. The Rockets blew out the Bulls 120-97 at the United Center. It was Houston’s third straight game with 120 points. The Bulls lost at home on Christmas for the first time (7-1) in franchise history. In the nightcap, the Clippers rolled to their 14th straight win with a 112-100 win over Denver. The Clips did their damage in the second quarter outscoring the visitors 42-22 in the second quarter.
Central Michigan vs Western Kentucky as Bowls resume tonight
Western Kentucky makes it’s first Bowl appearance ever as it takes on Central Michigan in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl at Ford’s Field in Detroit. The Hilltoppers opened as 5.5-point favorites and have been bet up to 6 1/2. The total has been bet down from 58.5 to the current 56 1/2. Western Kentucky is thrilled to be here after getting snubbed last year but had some of the air taken out of their sales when their head coach jumped ship to South Florida. Central Mich won four of five down the stretch to get Bowl eligible and possibly save Dave Enos’ job. The Chips are 1-4 as a dog this year. Five of the last seven WKU games were decided by five points or less. CMU’s last three Bowl games were all decided by a field goal. This figures to be a high scoring game that might be decided by the final possession. The game is indoors so weather will not be a factor.
Arizona gets final stop to edge San Diego State
No.3 Arizona improved to 12-0, the Wildcat’s best start in 25 in years, beating No.17 San Diego State 68-67 in the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic. It was a back and forth game most of the way that came down to the final play with the Aztecs Chase Tapley driving the lane for what looked to be an uncontested layup. Arizona guard Nick Johnson came out of nowhere to swat the ball away and preserve the one-point Wildcat victory. Solomon Hill led Zona with 21 points while Tapley was high man for SDSU with 19.
