MLB News and Notes
Ichiro’s infield single against the Angels on Monday was the 3996th hit of his career. Sure, the first 1278 of these hits came in Japan but don’t kid yourself ….. Ichiro was/is a great great player and very much underrated. He did himself a great dis-service by never learning English.
An Atlanta Braves fan has died after falling from the upper deck to the parking lot below. Police are investigating the incident and foul play has been ruled out. Another fan was killed falling from the Turner Field upper deck five years ago.
The Los Angeles Dodgers continued their red-hot play on Monday with a 4-2 win over the New York Mets for their sixth straight win and their 38th win in their L46 games. The Dodgers used a three-run sixth to get Ricky Nolasco his nonth win of the year. Tonight, the Dodgers face Met phenom Matt Harvey.
The Texas Rangers won for the 13th time in 14 games beating the Houston Astros 2-1. Yu Darvish pitched eight innings of one-hit ball while striking out 15. Darvish is 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA against Houston this year, twice taking no-hitters into the eighth inning.
News from around the NFL
The Kansas City Chief’s Jamaal Charles was carted of the field with a leg injury on Monday. The injury didn’t appear to be serious and precautionary X-rays were negative. Coach Andy Reid said there was a chance that Charles could practice on Tuesday.
The already thin San Diego Charger wide receiver corps took another hit Monday when Malcolm Floyd was carted off the field with a suspected ACL tear. Floyd will have an MRI today. The Bolts lost their other deep threat, Denario Alexander, last week with an ACL tear. Last season, Floyd led the Chargers in receptions and yards, hauling in 56 passes for 814 yards and five touchdowns. Alexander added 37 catches for 658 yards and seven touchdowns.
As injuries continue to mount throughout the league, we get this from Dallas. Cowboy backup offensive tackle darrion Weems missed practice Sunday after dropping a 325-pound bench press bar on his chest. Weems, who has been battling a thumb injury, was lifting open handed when the bar fell directly on his chest. Still sore, Weems should be able tp resume practice at the end of the week.
Manziel tied to two more signings, 4400 items in all
Sources at ESPN have uncovered another sports memorabilia dealer that allegedly had dealings with Johnny Manziel this offseason. Last year’s Heisman Trophy winner has been tied to two signings last January organized by Kevin Freistat of KLF Sports. The Freistat signings, combined with four sessions previously reported by “Outside the Lines,” would make six signings for three brokers in three states in less than a month for Manziel. Sources said he signed his name more than 4,400 times. Read all about the new allegations by clicking here.
Austin Dillon will sub for Tony Stewart this week
Austin Dillon, the Nationwide series point leader, will get this week’s ride in Tony Stewart’s No.14 Chevrolet at Michigan. Stewart is recovering from a broken leg sustained in a dirt track accident last week in Iowa. He was replaced this past weekend at Watkins Glen by Max Papis, who finished 15th. Dillon and Stewart are both sponsored by Bass Pro Shops which obviously played a big part in the decision.
Who was best in the 2013 golf majors ….. it was Adam Scott
There were only 13 golfers that made the cut in all 13 majors. Only one was ranked below Martin Kaymer at No.35 in the world and that was K.J. Choi at No.102 overall. Three of the 13 went on to win majors with only U.S. Open champ Justin Rose not making the cut at the British Open. The best aggregate of all was Adam Scott.
