NFL Day One Free Agent Signings
Yesterday was the first day of NFL free agency and the action was fast and furious.
The Miami Dolphins were the big winners on Day One signing former Steeler wide out Mike Wallace to a five-year deal. No exact numbers have been released but the contract is said to average $12 million a year with $30 million in guaranteed money. The Fist also locked up former Raven linebacker Dannell Ellerbe to a five-year $35 million dollar deal.
The Cleveland Browns signer Raven pass-rush specialist Paul Kruger to a five-year $41 million dollar deal. Kruger had 16 1/2 sacks as a part-ime player over the past two years including 11 1/2 this year. The Ravens overpaid Flacco and signed him early to concentrate on bringing back Ellerbe and Kruger. Now both are gone.
Bills cut Fitzpatrick, Eagles cut Asomugha
In two moves that were not all that surprising, the Buffalo Bills cut veteran starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who was owed a $3 million dollar bonus today. That reportedly clears the way for the Bills to take Geno Smith in the first round of the draft. The Eagles sent safety Nnamdi Asomugha on his way after just two seasons and will still have to pay him $4 million dollars to hit the street as an unrestricted free agent.
Dwight Howard gets 39 points and 16 boards in Orlando return
The Boo birds were out as expected for Dwight Howard’s return to the O-Rena but D12 got the last laugh in the Lakers 106-97 win over the Magic. Howard even hit his free throws going 25-39 (an NBA record tie for most FT attempts) from the charity stripe as Orlando resorted to hack-a-Dwight late. Five other Lakers scored in double-digits beut none with more than 14. Jameer Nelson led the Magic with 21 points in the loss.
Miami extends win streak to 19 with win over Atlanta
The Miami Heat recorded their franchise record 19th straight win with a 98-81 rout of the Atlanta Hawks. DWade/Lebron/Bosh combined for 53-14-14 in the east win. Josh Smith had 15 for the Hawks who were doomed by 24 turnovers.
LIU wins the Northeast, Valpo wins the Horizon
LIU and Valparaiso earned automatic bids into the Big Dance by winning their respective conference tournaments. The Blackbrids crushed red-hot Mount St Marys 91-70 to win their third consecutive NEC title. Valpo outscored Wright State 18-4 down the stretch to win the Horizon League crown. The Crusaders will be making their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2004.
US blasts Puerto Rico 7-1 at WBC
David Wright drove in five runs and Gio Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings as the United States beat Puerto Rico 7-1 in the World Baseball Classic in Miami. Wright did the big damage with a three-run double in the eighth and is now 7-for-16 in the competition with 10 RBIs. Five US relievers shut the door after Gonzalez as the American move on to face the unbeaten Dominican Republic in their next game.
Barcelona eliminates AC Milan as Messi nets two
Down 2-0 after the away leg of its Champions league sweet sixteen matchup with Milan and off back-to-back losses to their hated La Liga rival Real Madrid, things looked pretty bleak for for Barcelona in yesterday’s CL home leg rematch with the Italians. The cream generally rises to the top and it did in front of 99,000+ at the Nou Camp as Lionel Messi scored in the 5th and 40th minute to draw Barca even on the aggregate and David Villa scored 10 minutes after the half to send the Blaugrana through. Jordi Alba tacked on an insurance goal late.
