NFL News and Notes
The Jets Darelle Revis who suffered a concussion in the Jets opening week win over the Bills was not cleared for contact and will sit out Sunday’s game vs the Pittsburg Steelers.
Cam Newton could be without his two best weapons when the Panthers play the Saints. Wide Out Steve Smith and RB Jonathon Smith practiced on a limited basis on Friday and are listed as questionable. Carolina head coach Ron Rivera expects both to play.
The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly approached quarterback Tony Romo about a contract extension. Romo is locked up through 2013 making $9 million dollars this year and $11.5 million next year. Dallas can avoid a $8 million dollar cap hit if they extend his contract before this one runs out.
Most the Saints bountygate players will meet with Commissioner Roger Gooodell on Tuesday but LB Jonathon Vilma will reportedly have his own private meeting on Monday. Goodell suspended the players during the offseason but the suspensions were lifted on September 7th by a three-man appeals panel.
Washington State rolls UNLV
Wazzou picked up their first non-conference road win since 2006 with a 35-27 win at UNLV. Sophomore QB Connor Halladay threw for 378 yards and four first-half touchdowns for the Cougars. Rebel QB Nick Sherry had a school record 33 completions and 351 yards but that was still not enough from keeping UNLV from losing their second straight. The Cougars made things tougher on themselves than they needed to be with two wide open drops for touchdowns. A your-yard Sherry to Philips touchdown pass with 1:44 left sent UNLV and Over players to the cashier.

Braves win with Medlen again
Andrelton Simmons scored on a ninth-inning throwing error by Nat shortstop Ian Desmond in beating Washington 2-1. Kris Medlen threw seven innings of five-hit one-run ball striking out a career high 13. The Braves won for the 20th straight time with Medlen starting, a franchise record. The Yankees won 20 straight Roger Clemens starts back in 2001. The Bravos trail the Nasty Nats by 7.5 games in the NL East. The two will go at it again today with the Braves and Tommy Hanson -140 road favorites over Washington and Edwin Jackson.
Rose banishment pact goes to auction
Pete Rose has signed a lot of autographs in his time but none more important than the John Hancock he laid down on August 23, 1989 that effectively banned “Charlie Hustle” from MLB for life. Rose signed his full name “Peter Edward Rose” on the last page of a five-page document, along with the signatures of then commissioner A. Bart Giamatti and deputy commissioner Fay Vincent, detailing his banishment from baseball. Rose was banished for betting on baseball.
One of two original copies, the document figures to fetch into seven figures. A reserve price has not been set for the auction, but auctioneer Ken Goldin says he thinks it’s worth more than the highest price paid for a baseball document — the $996,000 paid in 2005 for the 1919 contract that sent Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees.
Former commissioner Fay Vincent was none too happy about the sale ….
“Nothing surprises me anymore,” Vincent told Willie Weinbaum of ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” via email. “But there is a certain sense of the absurd in turning an agreement about the abuse of our great game into cash for the miscreant.”
Pacquiao/Marquez IV set for December 8th
Manny Pacquiao and Manuel Marquez have signed for a fourth fight in their epic rivalry. Pacquiao owns a 2-0-1 edge in the series but many boxing experts would argue that Marquez won all three fights. The two will meet Dec. 8 (HBO PPV) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the site of their epic first and third fights. Pacquiao picked Marquez over welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley Jr., who claimed his belt with a controversial split-decision win against Pacquiao on June 9. Pacquiao will receive a reported guarantee of $23 million for the fight.
Boxing invades Las Vegas tonight
Boxing is alive in Las Vegas tonight with two major fights at two different major venues. At the Thomas & Mack Center, Sergio Martinez is a -210 favorite over Julio Caesar Chavez Jr (+170) in a middleweight championship showdown. At the MGM Grand Garden, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is a prohibitive -2500 favorite over Josesito Lopez in a light-middlweight tilt. The Sweet Science, at least for tonight, is alive and well in Sin City.
Navy/Penn State Under 47.5
Not interested in either laying or getting points with either of these two but can’t help but wonder where all these points will come from. The Navy option is always a tough thing to prepare for but the one thing Penn State was left in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal is a defense. The Nits were very good against the run last week allowing a pretty good Virginia team just 32 yards on 25 carries. The Lions should be in a good spot to hold a below average Navy outfit to 10-14 points. PSU has moved the ball OK but that has not translated into points as their red-zone offense and kicking game are abysmal. On top of that, the Middies have had extra time to prepare against an offense without much bite and in fact, the under is 3-1 the last three years when Navy is off a bye. Regardless the situation, Penn State will inevitably play an under. PSU is 9-3 low in their L12 home games, 8-0 low in their L8 September games, and 9-1 to the under in their L10 non-conference games. In a nutshell, Navy is a bit outmatched even by Joe Pa’s few remaining leftovers and Penn State couldn’t score in solitary confinement of a woman’s prison. Play the Under.
