Saints hand Falcons first loss, Texans handle Bears, Rams/49ers tie

It was an interesting Sunday in Week 10 in the NFL with several upsets and and some of the big boys flexing their muscles. Mercury Morris and the ’72 Dolphins popped champagne as the Saints beat the Falcons 31-27 leaving the NFL with no unbeaten teams. Atlanta had four shots inside the five in the final minute and was turned back. The Rams and the 49ers played to the league’s first tie since 2008 after 15 extra minutes couldn’t break a 24-24 deadlock. In the Sunday night finale on NBC, the Texans beat the Bears 13-6 under a deluge at Soldier Field. Jay Cutler was held out the entire second half with a concussion suffered after a late hit.

At the betting window, results were split across the board. Through Sunday and including Thursday night’s Indianapolis 27-10 win over the Jaguars ….. the dogs were 7-6 and the over 8-5 with the home teams going 7-5-1.

In tonight’s MNF matchup on ESPN, the Pittsburg Steelers are prohibitive 13-point home favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs. The over/under is down to 40 after opening at 43 1/2. The Chiefs own the dubious distinction of never having held a lead in any game in any game this year. They were down 24-6 in the only game that they won (vs the Saints) which was in overtime. Kansas City has lost five straight and scored just two touchdowns in their last 42 offensive possessions. The Steelers are off a big win at the Meadowlands and have won and covered three straight but …. NFC North non-divisions favorites are just 2-8 ATS, 2-4 at home. Chief games ave gone 6-2 to the over while four of the last five Steeler games have gone under. Tonight might be a good night to see a movie or do some early Christmas shopping.

Kansas State, Oregon, Notre Dame, Bama new 1-2-3-4

Alabama’s loss to Texas A&M Saturday definitely threw a wrench into this year’s National Championship title game picture and if Kansas State, Oregon, and Notre Dame take care of their business, there will be no SEC rep in Miami. Here are this week’s updated BCS and AP Top 25 rankings.

The Lakers hire D’Antoni

In a surprise move, the Los Angeles Lakers have hired Mike D’Antoni to replace Mike Brown as the their new head coach. The Lakers fired Brown on Friday after a 1-4 start. The Lakers have gone 2-0 since Brown’s firing after beating Sacramento 103-90 on Sunday night with Bernie Bickerstaff as the interim coach. D’Antoni is believed to have gotten a three-year deal for $12 million with a club option for a fourth year. Phil Jackson was reportedly stunned. SP3 will be following this late-breaking story as details become available.

Harvick wins Phoenix, Keselowski closes in on championship

Kevin Harvick snapped a personal 44-race winless drought by beating Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch to the checkered flag in Sunday’s AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Brad Keselowski finished sixth and took a 20 point lead over Jimmie Johnson (32nd) as the Chase heads to it’s final event next week at Homestead outside Miami. Johnson led Keselowski by seven points heading into the race but a blown tire and subsequent crash sent the No.48 to the garage for repairs and effectively end Johnson’s title run. Keselowski can seal the deal with a 15th place finish at Homestead or better.

Syracuse rolls San Diego State

In Sunday’s college basketball action, No.9 Syracuse spanked No.20 San Diego State 60-49 aboard the USS Midway. CJ Fair and Michael Carter-Williams each had 17 points for the Orange who lead by 14 at halftime. Jamaal Franklin was the only Aztec in double-figures with 11. The game was played on the USS Midway in San Diego and the only one of the “aircraft carrier games” to be played to a conclusion. The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was moved to Sunday due to bad weather in the area.

The NHL and NHLPA are still at an impasse

The league and the union met again on Sunday and made little progress in their talks leaving many pessimistic that a new CBA can or will be reached any time soon. Neither side appears to want to budge on the two key sticking points of the negotiations, the “make-whole” provision to honor existing player contracts and the broader issue of hockey-related revenue. Neither was discussed on Sunday. Instead, the two sides discussed player contracting issues including free agency, contact limits, arbitration, and strict variance rules. The lockout begins it’s 58th day on Monday.

UFC Macao recap and results

The UFC’s first incursion into China was a success with an action packed show in Macao. In the feature matchup, Asian action star Cung Le knocked out Rich Franklin with a devastating left hook. Le was a 4-1 underdog in the fight. In the co-feature, Thiago Silva submitted previously unbeaten Stanislav Nedkov with an arm triangle in the third round of their light heavyweight fight. Both fighters won $40,000 bonuses. Takanori Gomi beat Mac Danzig in a split decision in the Fight of the Night.
