Wisconsin knocks off Hoosiers 64-59
The Wisconsin Badgers just seem to have Indiana’s number. Wisky beat the country’s No.2 ranked team for the 11th straight time and did it the Wisconsin way …… slowing down play to a crawl, playing suffocating defense, and knocking down the occasional three pointer. Wisconsin limited the Hoosiers to just 37% from the field while burying several clutch threes in the 64-59 win. Indiana coach Tom Crean has never beaten Wisconsin since taking over in Bloomington.
Highlights of the Badgers upset of Indiana
Clippers whack Houston without Chris Paul
The Clippers continue to roll, even without All-Star PG Chris Paul who sat out his second straight game with a bruised kneecap. Tuesday, the Clipper spanked Houston 117-109 with Jamal Crawford leading the way with 30 points including the first 12 of the fourth quarter. The Clippers are now 11-1 when Crawford leads the team in scoring. James Harden had 23 for the Rockets who lost their season high fourth straight game.
College and NFL Football News and Notes
The San Diego Chargers have named Mike McCoy as their new head coach. McCoy has been the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos the past four years and was on the Carolina Panther staff for nine years prior to that. McCoy, 40, is the newest young blood added to the Bolt organization who also hired 40-year-old Tom Telesco as GM last week.
After interviewing 13 candidates, the Chicago Bears have named Marc Trestman as their new head coach. A supposed quarterback guru, Trestman has spent the past five seasons coaching the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes, leading them to two Grey Cup titles. In recent years, Trestman has worked as a consultant in the NFL and in the offseason helped develop quarterbacks entering the NFL, including Jay Cutler who he will be reunited with in Chicago.
Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas will not declare for the NFL draft and will instead return to the Hokies for his senior season. While Thomas told writers that Virginia Tech’s 7-6 record left a bad taste in his mouth, the reality is that nobody dropped on the draft board like the 6’6″ goliath from Lynchburg. In his projected breakout junior year, Thomas finished dead last among regular ACC starters for completion percentage (51.3) and interception percentage (3.73), serving up more picks than all but six other quarterbacks nationally. In five of 13 games, he failed to complete even half of his passes. His overall efficiency rating plummeted by nearly 20 points.
Nats ink closer Soriano
The Washington Nationals have signed ex-Yankee/Ray closer Rafael Soriano to a two-year $28 million dollar deal. Soriano will also have an option for a third year at $14 million if he is able to finish 120 games over the first two years for the Nationals. Soriano, 33, finished 54 games for the Yankees in 2012 after taking over as the team’s closer on May 10. He went 2-1 with a 2.26 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 69 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings with 42 saves. The Bronx Bombers will get Washington’s first pick in the 2013 amateur draft as compensation.
Kyle Busch re-ups with Joe Gibbs Racing
ESPN is reporting that Kyle Busch has signed a multi-year extension to remain with Joe Gibbs racing. The deal was apparently inked in December but will be officially announced at the team’s media day. The Sprint Cup media tour runs from Jan. 21-24. Busch is coming off a disappointing season in which he had only one win, missed the Chase and finished 13th in the points standings. He has 24 career Cup victories and a series-record 51 wins in the Nationwide Series.
