Orb wins the Derby, Bulls advance, Mayweather is Money, MLB News and Notes, Sportspurri + Saturday Recap: Sunday, May 5, 2013
- Updated: May 5, 2013
Orb gives Shug McGaughey his first Derby victory
Enjoying a near perfect ride from jockey Joel Rosario, Orb stormed down a clear lane down the center of the track to win the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2 lengths. 34-1 shot Golden Souls was a late charging second with Revolutionary third.
It was a popular win all the way around with native son Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey getting his first Kentucky Derby win and Orb justifying the ton of late money that wound up sending him off the 5-1 favorite. Orb paid $12.80, $7.40 and $5.40. Golden Soul returned $38.60 and $19.40, while Revolutionary paid $5.40 to show.
The final time of 2:02:89 was extremely fast considering the wet conditions and the off track. Palace Malice broke alertly and led the field through lighting fast opening fractions of 22:57 and 45:33 (the fourth fastest opening half in the history of the race) effectively cooking fellow front-runners Goldencents and Verrazano.
Derby Notes …..
Trainer Todd Pletcher sent out a record five horses in the race that finished 3rd, 9th, 11th, 12th and 14th. He’s now 1-36 in his career in the Derby.
Rosie Napravnik finished fifth with Mylute, the best ever finish for a woman jockey in the Run for the Roses.
Kevin Krigger, attempting to become the first black jockey to win since 1902, finished 17th with Goldencents. Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino owned 5% of the colt.
Attendance was announced at 151,616.
Orb puts the field away in mid-stretch to win the 139th Kentucky Derby
Short-handed Bulls take Game 7 over Nets in Brooklyn
The Chicago Bulls jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead in their Game Seven showdown with Brooklyn and held on to beat the Nets 99-93. Yannick Noah had 24 points and 14 rebounds while Marco Belinelli also chipped in with 24 as the Bulls were able overcome the loss of two starters to advance to a second round matchup with the Miami Heat. Deron Williams led Brooklyn with a 24-6-7 gameline but the Nets could not dig themselves out of the hole they dug themselves in the first 24 minutes.
Pretty Boy Floyd pounds out unanimous decision over Guerrero
A year off and a 30-day jail stint couldn’t stop Floyd Mayweather from remaining undefeated and defending his welterweight title. “Money May” never missed a beat in hammering out an easy unanimous decision victory over Robert Guerrero to improve to 44-0. All three judges had the fight 117-111 (9 rounds to 3) in favor of Mayweather. Guerrero could never generate any offense against his much faster opponent sustaining his first loss since 2005 and faling to 31-2-1.
MLB News and Notes
Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs and drove in six runs as the Tigers mauled Houston 17-2. Detroit hitters pounded out 21 hits as the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings and never looked back.
It was good news/bad news for the Dodgers Saturday after placing Hanley Ramirez back on the DL with a hamstring injury but having Zack Greinke throw a full bullpen session from a mound. Ramirez played just four games after missing the first month of the season after thumb surgery. Greinke needed surgery on a broken collarbone sustained in an April 11th brawl with the San Diego Padres.

Talladega qualifying washed out, Edwards on the pole
Rain washed out qualifying for today’s Nascar race at Talladega so Carl Edwards will start from the pole. Unlike most tracks that set the field by the Sprint Cup point standings when qualifying is not possible, Talladega uses practice speeds. Martin Truex Jr, Marcos Ambrose, Joey Logano, Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth round out the top three rows.
