Red Sox pummel Dodgers, 49ers spank Vikes, Scott win Barclays, 67K watch Dempsey home debut, Will Take Charge in Travers, Dude rolls in Pacific + Sunday Recap: Monday, August 26, 2013

Boston thumps Dodgers in ESPN finale
Jake Peavy threw a complete game three-hitter as Boston stomped the Dodgers 8-1 in Sunday night’s ESPN finale. That wouldn’t be news in itself except for the fact that the Dodgers lost their first series since (18 straight wins) late June. Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli and Jason Saltalamacchia all homered for the BoSox. Peavy improved to 14-2 lifetime vs the Dodgers, primarily during his time with the Padres.
MLB News and Notes
Roy Halladay pitched six innings to get a win in his first start off the DL as the Phillies beat Arizona 9-5. It was Halladay’s first start since having shoulder surgery in May.
Alphonso Soriano stole third and then scored on a Curtis Granderson sac fly as the Yankees avoided a weekend sweep with a 3-2 win over the Rays. In other Bronx Bomber news, Derek Jeter will give it another try and will be activated off the DL and start tonight in Toronto.
San Francisco impressive in dress rehearsal
Colin Kaepernick was sharp and the San Francisco defense was it’s usual crusty self in the 49ers 34-14 win over Minnesota in the teams dress rehearsal. Other than a several silly penalties, San Francisco was dominant in every aspect of the game. Adrian Peterson took two snaps but got no touches in the game for the Vikes. Tickets on the favorite and the over went to the pay window.
In Sunday’s matinee game, the New Orleans Saints stopped the Houston Texans 31-23. The teams played to a 17-16 half with the starters before two scores by the Whodat reserves got the win for the visitors. Drew Brees was 4-6 for 105 and a touchdown as the Saints were determined to run the football. Ben Tate had 11 carries for 74 yards for Houston and Andre Johnson had 7 catches for 131 yards.
Around the horn in the NFL camps
A Sunday MRI has revealed that Mark Sanchez has a bruised shoulder joint and is day to day. Sanchez has already been ruled out of the Jets NFLX finale against the Eagles on Friday.
Kevin Kolb’s concussion in Saturday’s loss at Washington was more serious than originally thought and could be career threatening. With first-round pick E.J. Manuel out the rest of the preseason after a minor knee procedure, the Bills have signed Matt Leinart.
Adam Scott fires final round 66 to take Barclays
With third-round leaders Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland tanking big on Sunday, Adam Scott stormed home with a 5-under 66 to take The Barclay, the first of the four event Fed Ex Cup playoff. Scott was a shot better than four others including Tiger Woods who was bothered all day with back spasms. Woods just missed a putt on 18 that would have forced a playoff.
Seattle wins Clint Dempsey home debut as 67K watch
The second largest crowd in MSL history watched the Seattle Sounders beat the Portland Timbers 1-0 to make Clint Dempsey’s home debut a winning one. Dempsey recently returned to the states after a transfer from Tottenham of the ELP and is now the highest paid player in the MSL. Eddie Johnson got the winner on a header in the 60th minutes as 67,385 watched.
Upset in the Travers, Game on Dude crushes older horses
It was a huge weekend in horse racing that included the Travers at Saratoga for the three-year-olds and the million-dollar Pacific for older horses at Del Mar. Will Take Charge upset Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Belmont winner Palace Malace at the Travers. Game on Dude firmly established himself as a possible Horse of the Year candidate with a wire-to-wire throttling of open horses winning by open lengths.
