Florida and Kansas State are big winners, Notre Dame and Ohio State survive
Unlike the first seven weeks of the season, there were no major upsets in the college ranks on Saturday with Florida and Kansas State emerging as the big winners. The Gators throttled South Carolina 44-11 in the swamp turning 29 yards of total first-half offense into 21 points. Facing three Top Five opponents in-a-row was too much for the Gamecocks who turned the ball over four times, three by fumble. In Morgantown, West Virginia, the Kansas State Wildcats opened up a Can of Whup Ass on the homestanding Mountaineers. KSU quarterback Collin Klein will be in this week’s Heisman talk after going 19-21 for 323 yards and three touchdown while rushing for four more in the 55-14 rout. Mountie QB gunslinger Geno Smith was a pedestrian 21-32 for just 143 yards, a touchdown, and his first two interceptions on the season.

UFL Suspends Operations
The UFL has suspended operations for 2012 and it is unclear at this point if the league is done for good. There had been rumors that the players and coaches were not getting paid and the league has reportedly been at the brink several times. Last week, Marty Schottenheimer, who led the Virginia Destroyers to last season’s UFL title, filed a $2.3 million dollar suit against the league for his unpaid salary, bonus compensation and expense reimbursement. The future does indeed look bleak for the UFL.
Garcia KOs “El Terrible” in 4th round
In the first ever boxing event at the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Danny Garcia stopped Erik Morales at 1:23 of the fourth round to retain his WBC and WBA super lightweight titles. The rematch of their March 24th fight in Houston won by Garcia by a close unanimous decision was not close this time. The 10-year younger champion softened up the 34-year-old challenger with a relentless body attack in the third round and then sealed the deal with a perfect left hook in the fourth to get the stoppage. This could signal the end of the line for the 52-9 Morales who has lost three of his last four.
Red Sox hire Jay’s John Farrell as their next manager
The Boston Red Sox have gone out and hired Toronto Blue Jay manager John Farrell as their next manager. Farrell was the pitching coach for the Red Sox from 2007-2010 and technically still under contract with the Jays through 2013. As a result, Toronto was owed compensation which came in the form of Mike Aviles. The 31-year-old utility infielder hit .250/.282/.381 with 13 homers, 60 RBI and 14 stolen bases this past season for the Red Sox. He can play second base, shortstop or third base.
