(NCAAF) Stanford -6.5 over Michigan State (Wednesday, January 1, 2014 5:00 PM EST)
This is a battle between two of the elite defensive teams in the country with both outfits in every top 20 defensive statistical catagory. In fact, Michigan State led the nation in total defense, rushing defense and third-down defense while Stanford was first in the nation in sacks, third in rush defense and tenth in points allowed. While both teams are comparable defensively, the advantage on offense is all Stanford. The Tree has a huge edge at QB with Kevin Hogan who is a big upside sophomore who now has 18 career starts. He’s completing 61% of his passes with a solid 20-8 TD/Int ratio and he has plenty to work with including a huge physical offensive line to block for Tyler Gaffney who rushed for 1600+ yards and 20 touchdowns. Ty Montgomery is the deep threat wide out and is also an elite return man. The Sparty offense is vanilla pedestrian at best and though Connor Cook has made strides calling the shots, he’ll have little time to work against the fearsome Stanford pass rush. This could be close for the first half as these two defensive heavyweights battle it out but in the end we can’t see anything other than a 27-10 type of Stanford victory.
