San Antonio stops Phoenix for eighth straight win
In Saturday NBA action, San Antonio used a 27-17 fourth quarter to turn back Phoenix 108-99 for their eighth straight win overall and their 16th straight win at home. Tony Parker had 31 points for the Spurs who played without Time Duncan for a third straight game. Duncan. who is nursing a sore knee, will miss Wednesday’s game vs the Bobcats but could return against Washington on February 2nd. Syracuse and Louisville among ranked teams to fall on Saturday
Yesterday at SB3, we mentioned that several ranked teams should be on upset alert. Well …. by the time we had our coffee in Las Vegas, Syracuse and Louisville had already bit the dust. No.3 Syracuse was beat 75-71 in overtime at Villanova while Louisville No.5 Louiville lost it’s third straight 53-51 at Georgetown. Other ranked teams to lose on Saturday were No.11 Kansas State, No.12 Minnesota, No.15 New Mexico, and No.19 VCU. Sunday’s feature action includes No.13 Michigan State traveling to No.7 Indiana and No.2 Michigan visiting an always tough venue at Illinois.

Blackhawks tie best start in franchise history
This would have been All-Star weekend in Columbus but instead of three-on-ones and the skills competition, Blue Jacket fans saw the Chicago Blackhawks match the best start in franchise history. Corey Crawford stopped 24 shots and Jonathon Toews notched the game winner on a wrist shot early in the third as Chicago improved to 5-0-0 with a 3-2 win at Columbus. The Blackhawks matched their best start since 1971-72 with the win. Chicago beat Columbus in all six meetings last year.
The tax man visits lucky fan
Yesterday we showed you a lucky fan who won $75,000 with a hook shot from half-court that hit nothing but net. With any windfall, there comes the inevitable visit from the taxman. Michael Drysch, a 50-year-old computer tech from McHenry, Ill., will have 25% taken out automatically for federal income tax and when you add in Illinois 5% state income tax, Drysch will actually see about $52,770 and could get whacked for more depending on what he makes in 2013. Still beats a stick in the eye.
