Griffin, Harden, and Iguodala complete Team USA

Team USA basketball is complete. Blake Griffin, James Harden, and Andre Iguodala will join 2008 Olympics Gold Medalists LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams along with 2010 World Championships Gold Medalists Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love and Tyson Chandler to face the world in London. Griffin, Harden, and Iguodala came out of a pool of six that also included the first overall in the 2012 draft Anthony Davis, Eric Gordon, and Rudy Gay.

Serena wins fifth Wimbledon, the sisters are doubles champs too

It was a monster day for Serena Williams who went out and won her fifth Wimbledon singles title with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win over Agnieszka Radwanska and then doubled up with sister Venus to take the women’s double title with a 7-5, 6-4 win over the Czech duo Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

Roger Federer plays for his seventh Wimbledon Men’s Championship today vs. native son Andy Murray. The Swiss legend is a -250 favorite in the match despite being just 7-8 lifetime vs. the Brit. Murray is the first Englishman to play in the Men’s final since Henry “Bunny” Austin in 1938. Murray is 0-2 vs Federer in Grand Slam events.

Tony Stewart wins at Daytona

Tony Stewart passed Matt Kenseth on the final lap and then avoided a 15-car wreck to go on and win the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona. Jeff Burton weaved through traffic and spinning cars to finish second. Kenseth, who led 89 of the 160 laps finished third. Joey Logano, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski, Michael Waltrip, and Bobby Labonte rounded out the top ten. Kenseth holds a 16 point lead over Dale Earnhardt Jr in the Chase with Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, and Stewart rounding out the top five.

In other Nascar news, driver A.J. Allemndinger has been suspended for failing a random drug test. Sam Hornish Jr., drove the No. 22 car (Allmendinger’s regular ride for Penske racing) in last night’s Coke Zero 400.

Silva the best at UFC 148

Anderson Silva extended his unbeaten streak to 16 fights and successfully defended his middleweight title for a record 10th straight time with a second-round TKO of Chael Sonnen at UFC 148 at the MGM Grand Gardens in Las Vegas. in the most highly anticipated rematch in MMA history, it looked like it might be an instant replay of their first fight with Sonnen taking down “The Spider” within 10 seconds and controlling Silva for the rest of the round. Early in the second round, Sonnen lost his balance after a attempting a spinning back fist and got caught with a solid knee to the head. Silva pounced and did what he does best getting the stoppage at the 1:04 mark.

In the other fights off the pay-for-view portion of the card, Forrest Griffin won a unanimous decision in his rematch with Tito Ortiz. It was the “retirement” match for the Huntington Beach Bad Boy who looked sharp in defeat. Asian action-film superstar Cung Le won a unanimous decision over Patrick Cote to gain his first win in the UFC. Le was an undefeated kickboxer before going into the movies. Demian Maia and Chad Mendes both got easy first-round stoppages and Mike Easton posted a decision win over Ivan Menjivar in Bantamweight action. The attendance was 15,016 and the gate a Nevada record $7 million.

Wladimir Klitschko retains belts with sixth-round TKO

Wladamir Klitschko floored challenger Tony Thompson with a big right hand in the fifth round and then stopped him in the sixth to retain his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight belts last night in Bern, Switzerland. Klitschko had previously stopped Thompson in 2008. The 36-year-old champion improved to 58-3 with 51 knockouts and led the crowd of 22,000 in singing “Happy Birthday” to trainer Emanuel Steward, who turned 68 on Saturday.

Padres to the O’Malleys for $800 million

A group led by the O’Malley family which owned the Dodgers for decades has agreed in priciple to buy the San Diego Padres for a reported $800 million.

The opening total has been posted at 8 1/2. The deal includes $200 million for a portion of the team’s equity stake in FOX Sports San Diego and is pending but expected to be approved by MLB owners within two weeks. As reported here at Sportsbetting3 over a month ago, golfer Phil Mickelson is reportedly part of the O’Malley group.

The American League has been installed as a small -122 favorite in Tuesday’s All-Star game in Kansas City.
