Surgeons across sports were busy on Wednesday
Kevin Love will miss 8-10 weeks after it was determined that he will need surgery to repair two broken bones in his right hand. Love broke the hand originally in the preseason and missed the first three weeks of the regular season despite returning earlier than expected. Love was averaging 18 ppg and 14 rpg but shooting just 35% from the field, far off his normal game.
As expected, RGIII had surgery on his knee. Dr James Andrews performed a “direct repair” of the lateral collateral ligament and “a re-do of his previous ACL reconstruction.” Andrews said after the procedure that because Griffin is so highly motivated, everyone was hopeful that he would make a complete recovery.
Cleveland Cavalier center and the leading rebounder in the NBA, Anderson Varejao, will need surgery on a split quadriceps muscle above his right knee and will miss a minimum of 6-8 weeks. The surgery will be performed today at the Cleveland Clinic. Varejao is averaging 14.4 rebounds-per-game and has been the focus of trade rumors among contenders needing a big man.
Minnesota spanks Illini in battle of Top 12ers
In a battle of No.8 vs No.12, the Minnesota Golden Gophers went into Champaign and crushed Illinois 84-67. Minnesota shot 53% for the game including 9-15 from behind the arc to dispatch the homies. Joe Coleman led the Gophers with a career-high 29 points and Andre Hollins scored 22. Trevor Mbakwe had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Minneosta used a 50-37 second half to blow open a four-point game after 20 minutes. Brandon Paul had 21 for Illinois.
NBA back to Seattle next year ???
Unable to get a new arena built in Sacramento, it looks like Gavin and Joe Maloof will sell the Sacramento Kings to a Seattle group for a reported $500 million. The new owners, the Hansen-Ballmer group, have said that they would immediately move the team to Seattle ans start play next year at the old Key Arena. The city of Seattle approved the building of a new arena which is expected to be ready in about two years.
Bonds, Clemens, Sosa blanked in Hall of Fame voting
For just the second time in four decades, nobody was elected to the MLB Hall of Fame. The Baseball Writers of America sent a loud and clear message to the stars of the PED era that any hint of indiscretion would hurt you at the ballot box. This is an extremely interesting piece from ESPN and a must see if you a baseball fan.
NHL Board of Governors unanimously ratify new deal
All 30 Board of Governors were on hand to vote as the NHL ratified the new tentative CBA. The deal will become official when it is ratified by the players. The vote, which will be held electronically for the 700-plus membership, is expected to be finished by Friday or Saturday. Training camps are tentatively set to open Sunday, the source said, with a 48-game regular season scheduled to start Jan. 19.
Lance Armstrong to come clean on Oprah ???
Lance Armstrong has apparently agreed to a tell-all no-holds-barred interview with Oprah Winfrey to discuss allegations he used performance-enhancing drugs during a career in which he won seven Tour de France titles. Rumors flew this weekend that Armstrong would come clean and admit to doping so as to be able to return to competitive racing. It is unclear whether the show has already been taped but it will air on January 17th.
