The Super Bowl produces Super Betting Handle + Monday Recap: Tuesday, February 5th, 2013
- Updated: February 5, 2013
A record $98.9 million bet on Super Bowl in Nevada
Sports fans in the state of Nevada bet a record $98.9 million dollars on Sunday’s Super Bowl and for the 21st time in 23 years, the books came away big winners keeping better than $7.2 million. Preliminary unaudited numbers release by the state Gaming Control Board said that the monster handle taken in by Nevada’s 183 legal books smashed the previous record of $94.5 million bet in 2006. Oddsmakers said that a late surge in money from Californians who flocked to Las Vegas and Northern Nevada to bet the 49ers were responsible for the big take. The Books would have actually done much better had they not been hammered on certain props including whether or not (there was) there would be a safety.
NFL News and Notes
In other Super Bowl related news, the Ravens/49ers matchup drew record TV ratings as expected. Better than 164.1 million viewers watched or sampled CBS’ coverage of Super Bowl XLVII, up 3 percent from last year’s 159.2 million for the Giants 21-17 win over the Patriots.
The Lions have released problem child wide out Titus Young. The promising second year man from Boise State had numerous run ins with the team that included discipline for intentionally lining up wrong in a Week 14 game vs Green Bay. Young had 81 catches in 26 games for Detroit.
Knicks bomb Pistons for 5th straight win
The Knicks jumped out to a 28-13 first quarter lead against the travel weary Detroit Pistons and cruised to a 99-85 win. Carmelo Anthony had 27 points, Tyson Chandler 20 rebounds and Raymond Felton nine helpers for the winners. Amare Stoudamire and JR Smith chipped in with 20 and 16 off the bench respectively. Jose Calderone led the leg weary visitors with points.
Blake Griffin saw his 197 consecutive game streak come to an end in Monday’s Clipper loss to the Wizards. Griffin was a late scratch after aggravating a strained left hamstring. Griffin had played every game since 2009 after missing his entire rookie season with a knee injury.
Indiana tops in USA poll too
Yesterday, Sportsbetting3 reported that Indiana was the new No.1 in the AP Top 25 poll. The Coach’s USA Today poll had not been released but the Hoosiers also sit atop the USA standings with 25 of 31 first place votes. Florida was second garnering the other six first-place votes. Like the AP poll, Michigan, Duke and Kansas round out the top five. Indiana plays two road games this week, at Illinois and at Ohio State. We’ve had a new No.1 in each of the last five weeks.
The Ducks hand the Sharks their first in regulation loss
The 6-1-1 Anaheim Ducks continued their hot play out of the box with a 2-1 win over San Jose. It was the 7-1-1 Sharks first loss this year in regulation. Viktor Fasth had 26 saves and Saku Coivu and Sheldon Souray had third period goals for the winners.
The Phoenix Coyotes got off to a slow start but have now picked up points in five straight games after Monday’s 2-1 win over Minnesota. With Coyote ownership in limbo and and questions as to whether the desert Dogs will remain in Phoenix limited the announced crowd to just 9508 or about 55% of capacity.
