Verlander monster in Motown 2-1 win

Justin Verlander took a shutout into the ninth and former Yankee Phil Coke shut the door on his ex-mates as the Detroit Tigers beat the Yankees 2-1 on Tuesday night. The Bronx counters with ace C.C. Sabathia on full rest. The Tigers are slight -105 favorites with the total 7 shaded 22 cents to the under. First pitch is at 8:00 PM EST.

The NLCS resumes today in St Louis at 4:05 PM EST with the series tied 1-1. San Francisco sends Matt Cain to the mound to face the Cards Kyle Lohse. In Tuesday night’s college football action, North Texas came from 20-6 down to beat UL Lafayette 30-23 in a Sunbelt tilt. The US Men’s Soccer team advanced to the final six of of regional World Cup qualifying after beating Guatemala 3-1 in Kansas City. After surrendering an early goal, Carlos Bocanegra got the equalizer and Clint Dempsey added the winner and insurance. The US joins Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, and Jamaica in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying starting on March 22ns with the top three advancing to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Holmgren out in Cleveland

Tuesday, the NFL approved Jimmy Haslam was approved as the new owner of the Cleveland Browns and his first order of business was to get rid of Mike Holmgren. Former Eagle exec Joe Banner will be announced as the new CEO/top executive this week and Holmgren will “retire” at the end of the season. Holmgren learned of Banner’s arrival on Sunday and will stay on to aid the transition, but no longer has any say in team policy or decisions.

NHL offers 50-50 split with full season starting Nov 2nd

In the latest round of negotiations between the NHL and the NHLPA, the league has offered the players a 50-50 split of hockey related revenue and a full 82-game schedule that would begin on November 2nd. The NHLPA held a conference call Tuesday evening to discuss the offer with the players’ negotiating committee and the union’s executive board. Hopefully, and end to the lockout is near.
