Verlander monster in Motown 2-1 win
Justin Verlander took a shutout into the ninth and former Yankee Phil Coke shut the door on his ex-mates as the Detroit Tigers beat the Yankees 2-1 on Tuesday night. Detroit now leads the ALCS series 3-0. Delmon Young had a solo home run and Miguel Cabrera an RBI double for all the offense the Tigers would need as Justin Verlander shut down the Bomber offense on just two hits by Ichiro through eight innings facing a revamped pinstripe lineup. Edwin Nunez led off the top of the ninth with a homer, Verlander got one last out on his 132 pitch, and Coke did the rest. Detroit and Max Scherzer can eliminate the New Yorkers tonight. The Bronx counters with ace C.C. Sabathia on full rest. The Tigers are slight -105 favorites with the total 7 shaded 22 cents to the under. First pitch is at 8:00 PM EST.
The NLCS resumes today in St Louis at 4:05 PM EST with the series tied 1-1. San Francisco sends Matt Cain to the mound to face the Cards Kyle Lohse. Homestanding St Louis is a -122 favorite with the high/low set at 7 with a 20 tax on the over. Cain is 1-1 with a 4.60 ERA in his last three starts. He didn’t get out of the six inning in any of them. He’s 1-1 with a 6.89 ERA vs St Louis this year. Lohse is 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in his last five starts. he did not face the Giants in 2012. Giants 2B Marco Scutaro, who injured his hip after getting taken out by a Matt Holday slide to break up a double play, is expected to play.
North Texas closes on 24-3 run to beat ULL
In Tuesday night’s college football action, North Texas came from 20-6 down to beat UL Lafayette 30-23 in a Sunbelt tilt. The Mean Green rolled to 524 yards, 242 on the ground, and almost 37 minutes of time-of-possession. North Texas was the latest home dog to win straight up. The 53 points never approached the the 56.5 point total. There is no college football on Wednesday. The No.2 Oregon Ducks headline Thursday night’s NCAAF card as 10-point favorites at Arizona State. Houston is a -5.5 road favorite at SMU in CUSA action.
US advances in World Cup qualifying with 3-1 win over Guatemala
The US Men’s Soccer team advanced to the final six of of regional World Cup qualifying after beating Guatemala 3-1 in Kansas City. After surrendering an early goal, Carlos Bocanegra got the equalizer and Clint Dempsey added the winner and insurance. The US joins Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, and Jamaica in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying starting on March 22ns with the top three advancing to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Holmgren out in Cleveland
Tuesday, the NFL approved Jimmy Haslam was approved as the new owner of the Cleveland Browns and his first order of business was to get rid of Mike Holmgren. Former Eagle exec Joe Banner will be announced as the new CEO/top executive this week and Holmgren will “retire” at the end of the season. Holmgren learned of Banner’s arrival on Sunday and will stay on to aid the transition, but no longer has any say in team policy or decisions.

NHL offers 50-50 split with full season starting Nov 2nd
In the latest round of negotiations between the NHL and the NHLPA, the league has offered the players a 50-50 split of hockey related revenue and a full 82-game schedule that would begin on November 2nd. The NHLPA held a conference call Tuesday evening to discuss the offer with the players’ negotiating committee and the union’s executive board. Hopefully, and end to the lockout is near.
