Five turnovers send the Jets home for the playoffs

The New York Jets will not be in the payoffs for the second straight year. The Flyboys were eliminated from playoff contention after Monday night’s four interception and one fumble performance by Mark Sanchez. The game was eerily reminiscent of the Jets 49-19 Thanksgiving Day debacle vs New England where they also turned the ball over five times. In a game that was for the most part a snoozer, the games lone highlight came on a 94-yard run for a touchdown by the Titan’s Chris Johnson midway through the second period. Other than that play, Johnson rushed for 28 yards on 21 carries. Jake Locker was just 13-22 for 149 and no scores but scrambled 13 yards for the winner on the final play of the third period. With the Jets going off a 1-point favorite, dog and under players cashed their tickets.

Josh Brent will be barred from Cowboy sidelines

The NFL and the Cowboys both agreed that Josh Brent’s appearance on the Dallas sideline Sunday was inappropriate and will not happen again. Brent is out on bail after being charged with intoxicated manslaughter after an early morning one-car crash that killed teammate Jerry Brown. Brent was encouraged to come by his teammates and driven to the stadium by a player on injured reserve. Head coach Jason Garrett and owner Jerry Jones had no prior knowledge that Brent would be on the sidelines until seeing him there after kickoff. Brent left the stadium during the third quarter when he realized that his presence was causing a commotion.

Rockets rout Knicks in Lin’s return to MSG

Jeremy Lin scored 22 points and dished out 8 assists as the Houston Rockets handed the Knicks their first home loss of the season 109-96. James Harden led the Rockets with 28 points and 10 boards as Houston completes a season sweep of the Knicks. Chris Copeland led New York with 29 points, subbing for Carmelo Anthony who is nursing a bad ankle. There was no “Linsanity” at MSG as the former Knick was either booed or given polite applause by the sell-out crowd.

Boeheim gets career victory #900

As reported here on SP3 yesterday, Jim Boeheim did get his 900th victory as the head coach of Syracuse but it was not that easy. Despite a 40-21 halftime lead and a 20 point lead with 10 minutes to play, the Detroit Titans roared back with a 16-0 run to cut the deficit to four before Syracuse finally prevailed 72-68. Boeheim joins Coach K and Booby Knight as the only two Div-I college basketball coaches with 900 wins.

Dickey passes physical, agrees to extension, traded to Jays

The New York Mets have traded their bionic elbowed knuckleballed RA Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays for a package that included top catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud. The trade was finalized when Dickey passed his physical and agreed to an extension with Toronto. Dickey, 38, was 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 230 strikeouts in 233 2/3 innings last season, when he was the first knuckleballer to win a Cy Young. The extension is for three years and $29 million, with a $12 million club option for 2016. That club option has a $1 million buyout, so Dickey’s deal is essentially worth $30 million total. The breakdown is that Dickey will make $5 million next season, $12 million in 2014, $12 million in 2015. Dickey plans to donate $300,000 of the contract to charity.
