Tuesday Tourney Results, Nuggets jolt Thunder, Dominicans win WBC + Tuesday Recap: Wednesday, March 20, 2013
NC A&T and St Mary’s are first to advance
Tuesday’s college basketball action featured the first two play-in games of the the Big Dance with North Carolina A&T and St Mary’s advancing to the field of 64. The Aggies turned back a furious rally by Liberty to win 73-72. The Gaels had little difficulty dispatching Middle Tennessee State 67-54. A&T will meet the tournament’s top seed Louisville on Thursday. St Mary’s moves on to play Memphis.
There are two play-in games on tonight’s schedule with LIU taking on James Madison and Boise State meeting LaSalle. The Blackbirds are -2 against the Dollies who will play the first half without leading scorer Keyshawn Goins who is suspended. The total opened at 144 and has been bet up to 146. In the second game Boise State opened as a pick and has been bet up to -2. The total has not moved off the opening number of 139.
Robert Morris takes down Kentucky in the opening round of the NIT
In what looked to be an upset to the caual fan but not so much so to the sports bettor, John Calipari and Kentucky’s nightmare season came to an end with a 59-57 loss at Robert Morris. The Cats were forced to go on the road (with the big tournament playing in Lexington) where they were winless after losing shot-blocking big man Nerls Noel to a knee injury in February. Kentucky trailed 9-0 off the git go and played from behind for most of the game before finally getting bounced by the highly motivated Colonials. Other winners in opening round NIT action were St Johns, Maryland, Louisiana Tech, Alabama, Virginia, BYU, Denver, and Stanford.
In the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) tournament ….. George Mason edged College of Charleston 78-77, Wyoming snuck by Lehigh 67-66, and Santa Clara was ten better than Vermont 77-67.
In the College Invitational Tournament ….. the winners were Rider, East Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Youngstown State, Loyola Maryland and the Evansville Purple Aces. All tournaments resume with action tonight.
Nuggets bomb Thunder in OKC for 13th straight win
Don’t be so quick to concede the Western Conference to the Oklahoma City Thunder just yet. The Denver Nuggets have flown under the radar since the first of the year and last night won their 13th straight game, 114-104 in Oklahoma City. Andre Miller had 20-7-9 off the bench for surging Denver. Ty Lawson added 25 for the winners while Kevin Durant led the Thunder with a 34-7-5 stat line.
The Dominican Republic caps 8-0 run with WBC championship
The Dominican Republic shut out Puerto Rico 3-0 Tuesday night to win their first ever World Baseball Championship. The Dominicans were dominant in going 8-0 through the tournament including beating second place Puerto Rico three times.
Pens edge the Caps 2-1 for their 10th straight win
The Pittsburg Penguins edged the Washington Capital 2-1 Tuesday night for their 10th straight win. Alex Ovechkin and Paul Martin traded power play goals before Matt Niskanen got the winner at 11:58 of the third period on a snapshot. Pittsburg improved to 23-8-0 and are three points clear of Montreal at the top of the Eastern Conference. Washington dropped to 12-16-1, second to last in the Eastern Conference.

Green Bay Packer linebacker AJ Hawk took a huge $7 million dollar pay cut to stay in Green Bay. Hawk will be paid $10.6 million over the last three years of his five-year deal compared to the original $17.85 million. His cap impact this season was reduced from $7.05 million to $5.2 million.
