UConn beats Pitt 24-17 in Friday night NCAAF

In Friday night’s college football action, UConn jumped out to a 24-0 lead over Pitt and then hung on to win 24-17 on ESPN2. Chandler Whitmer threw for 213 yards and a score, Lyle McCombs ran for 120 yards and a score, and Nick Williams returned a punt 80 yards for the winners. Pitt was flat as a pancake, unable to shake the effects of a short work week and a triple-OT loss at Notre Dame last Saturday. The Huskies won as a home dog and even with a late Pitt flurry, the game stayed under the total.

Week 11 of college football lacks the marquee matchups of the past two weeks but there is still several intriguing game involving ranked teams on Saturday. No.1 Alabama survived LSU last week but gets Johnny Football and the red-hot Texas A&M Aggeis this week. The Tide is currently a 14-point favorite in the 3:00 PM EST start. Today we’ll find out the true status of Heisman Trophy front-runner Collin Klein as Kansas State travels to Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth to face a young 6-3 upstart TCU team. The Wilcats are 7-point favorites. Two key matchups will help shape the face of the Pac 12 as No.13 Oregon State faces No.16 Stanford in Palo Alto and a desperate Arizona State teams meets USC at the Coliseum. The Cardinal is a four-point home favorite over the Beavers and the Trojans will be saddled with a nine-point impost against the Sun Devils.

Lakers fire Mike Brown, Knicks 4-0 and last unbeaten

Just three hours after SP3 reported here that Laker HC Mike Brown’s job was in jeopardy after a 1-4 start, the Lakers fired him. Bernie Bickerstaff was named interim coach and guides LA to a 101-77 win over Golden State last night. The Lakers started their search for a new coach immediately and Phil Jackson, Mike D’Antoni, and Jerry Sloan are on the short list.

The Knicks beat Dallas 104-94 at Madison Square Garden and are the league’s last remaining unbeaten team. All four Knick wins are by double-digits. Carmelo Anthony led the way with 31 points and 7 boards. Tyson Chandler did it on the defensive side with 11 points, 9 rebounds and a couple of key defensive plays. OJ Mayo led the Mavs with 23 points.

College Basketball opening day recap

Day One of the college basketball season saw a couple of upsets and a couple of cancellations of games due to wet floors. In the days first action, No.14 Michigan State was upset by UConn 66-62 in the Armed Forces Classic at Ramstein Air Force base in Germany. The Huskies won straight up as 7-point dogs. No.3 Kentucky survived a scare from Maryland beating the Terps 72-69 at the Barclays Classic in Brooklyn. Florida and Georgetown was cancelled after halftime when the floor on the USS Butaan in Jacksonville became unplayable due to moisture. The Gators led 27-23 after 20 minutes. The game will not be finished or replayed. No.4 Ohio State and Marquette was also cancelled due to unsafe playing conditions. That game was scheduled to be played on the USS Yorktown in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. No.1 Indiana, Duke, Kansas, UCLA and Baylor were other ranked teams that opened their seasons with wins on Friday.

NHL opposes new Canadian sports-betting bill

The NHL is opposing new legislation that would allow Canadians single game NHL betting. If passed, the bill would allow each province to decide on allowing betting and repeal the criminal code section that prohibits wagering on a single sporting event. Canadians can currently wager on multiple outcomes on a single ticket, in essence parlays.

MLB Hot Stove News

NL Manager of the Year favorite Davey Johnson and the Washington Nationals have agreed to a new contract. The 69-year-old Johnson guided the Nats to a MLB best 98 wins and the NL East title. Johnson owns a career record of 1,286-995 in 16 years and ranks 18th all-time in games over .500 with 291.

Nick Swisher’s Yankee career might be over but there is no lack of interest around the league with the Mariners, Orioles, Braves, and Giants reportedly interested in his services. Swisher could command as much as $11 to $13 million per for 3-4 years.
