Week 11 in the NFL Sunday recap

Overtime was the theme of Sunday’s NFL action as Bucs/Panthers, Browns/Cowboys, and Jags/Texans could not be decided in 60 minutes. The Bucs scored with 12 seconds left in regulation and also made a two-point conversion to force their overtime. A 15-yard Josh Freeman to Dallas Clark pass was the winner. It was another devastating late loss for Carolina who never got the ball in OT. Dallas came back from a 13-0 halftime deficit to beat the Browns 23-20 on a Dan Bailey 38-yarder at the 6:07 mark. The 16-point dog Jacksonville Jags have the Houston Texans all they wanted. Houston needed the final two TDs in regulation to knot things at 34-34. The Texans got the win when Andre Johnson took a bubble screen 48 yards for the win. In the late game, the Ravens survived 13-10 at Pittsburg. The Baltimore defense played its best game of the year against Pitt backup Byron Leftwich. SP3 will have a more on the Tuesday report including an injury update on the Patriots Rob Gronkowski who suffered a broken forearm.

At the betting window, it was pretty much mixed results across the board. Including the Dolphins/Bills Thursday nighter, favorites held a slight 7-6 edge over the dogs, the Under enjoying an 8-5 edge vs the Over. Home teams were just 7-6 for the week and there were no home dog straight up winners.

In tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup, the Bears travel to Candlestick Park to face the 49ers. There were questions surrounding the health of both starting quarterbacks throughout the week but Chicago’s Jay Cutler was ruled out mid-week with a concussion and will be replaced by Jason Campbell. Alex Smith was cleared for contact over the weekend and is listed as probable for the game but expect to see Colin Kaepernick to still get plenty of snaps in certain packages. San Francisco opened at -6.5 but has been bet down to -5 1/2. The total opened at 37 but is now down to 35 1/2. Weather will be near perfect by the Bay with a game time temperature of 58 expected at game time.

Notre Dame and Alabama are the new 1-2, Irish just one win away

The unbeaten Notre Dame Fighting Irish are one win away from a spot in the National Championship game and will face a struggling USC team without it’s star quarterback Matt Barkley. The Trojan gunslinger hurt his shoulder in Saturday’s 38-28 loss to UCLA and has been declared out vs the Irish. SP3 will have more on college football including possible Bowl scenarios in the Tuesday report.

The Durantula registers first career triple-double

Kevin Durant got the first triple-double of his career going for 25 points, 13 rebounds, and a career-high 10 assists in OKC’s 119-109 win over Golden State on Sunday. The three-time scoring leader is being asked to do more this year and has struggled somewhat with his floor game. The Durantula is averaging more than four turnovers per game, fourth worst in the NBA. The Knicks, Raptors, 76ers, Nets, Pistons, Portland and the Lakers were the other Sunday winners. Home teams were 7-1 with only the Sacramento Kings (Brooklyn) not holding serve.

Jeff Gordon wins Homestead, Keselowski takes first title

Jeff Gordon won Nascar’s final race of 2012 taking the checkered flag over Clint Bowyer and Ryan Newman. Brad Keselowski needed to finish 15th to secure his first Sprint Cup championship and he finished 15th but it wasn’t easy. Keselowski ran out of gas in pit row during one of his green flag stops as fell a lap down as Jimmie Johnson (the only driver who could have beat Keselowski) forged for the lead. A missing lug nut and a broken gear in his Chevy’s rear end with 40 laps to go killed any chance of a Johnson miracle and handed the title to Keselowski.
