Jeter 1-for-4 with RBI in return, leaves with tight quad

Derek Jeter returned to the Yankee lineup Thursday in the Bombers 8-4 win over Kansas City. Jeter batted second as the DH and went 1-for-4 with an RBI. “The Captain” beat out a three-hopper to third on the first pitch of his first at bat for his hit and later scored on a sac fly. Lakers officially amnesty Metta World Peace in cap move

The Los Angeles Lakers have finally amnestied 14-year veteran Metta World Peace. By waiving MWP under the amnesty provision of the new collective bargaining agreement, the Lakers will save about $19 million in cap room and luxury tax money. Peace will still receive the $7.7 million due him from the Lakers and will likely not be on the market long as he is still a valuable piece for a team looking to sure up it’s bench depth. World Peace averaged 12.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in 75 games last season with Los Angeles. Prior to joining the Lakers in 2009, he played with the Rockets, Kings, Pacers and Bulls, averaging 14.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals over the course of his career.

The Brooklyn Nets have reached a two-year deal with forward Andrei Kirilenko. A solid offensive player and defensive specialist, Kirilenko opted out of a deal with Minnesota that would have paid him $10 million this year to take a pay cut and play with a team that he evidently thinks can win a championship.

Kovalchuk returns to Russia leaving $77 million on the table

In a somewhat shocking development, the Devils Ilya Kovalchek has retired from the NHL leaving $77 million in contract money on the table. In a statement, the 30-year-old Kovalchuk said ….

‚ÄúThis decision was something I have thought about for a long time going back to the lockout and spending the year in Russia. Though I decided to return this past season, Lou was aware of my desire to go back home and have my family there with me. The most difficult thing for me is to leave the New Jersey Devils, a great organization that I have a lot of respect for, and our fans that have been great to me.”

During his 11 years in the NHL, Kovalchuk was one of the most dominant offensive players in the league, scoring 417 goals to go with 399 assists with the Atlanta Thrashers and Devils.

Louisville to chop championship floor for charity

The Louisville Cardinals will be selling pieces of the floor where they won this year’s NCAA championship with the proceeds to benefit pediatric cancer research. At least 1000 of the pieces will be signed by Cardinal coach Rick Pitino. You can check out the engraved pieces and get detail by clicking here.

In related Louisville basketball news, Kevin Ware could be back playing basketball in October. Ware is on schedule with his rehabilitation of the gruesome compound fracture of his leg sustained during March Madness.
