Bengals capitalize on Eagles turnovers in 34-13 win
The Bengals took advantage of the three Eagle turnovers during 71 seconds of the third period to turn a 13-10 deficit into a 34-13 rout. In a sloppily played game where awful was the best word to describe Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton, BenJarvis Green-Ellis (25-106, TD) and the defense pretty much saved the day for the 8-6 Bengals. The Eagles were sunk by a pick and four lost fumbles. Favorite and over players cashed their tickets after the smoke had cleared.
Al Golden stays with Miami, turns down Wisconsin job
Miami Florida head coach Al Gruden will stay with the Hurricanes after “humbly” turning down an offer for the same job at Wisconsin. Golden is 13-11 in two years as the head man of the Canes and was Bowl eligible in both years but the school self-imposed a bowl ban both years in light of the ongoing NCAA investigation into the program. Considering possible future sanctions imposed by the NCAA, this is a pretty good statement about Golden’s dedication to the school.
Lakers now 2-8 on the road after 116-107 loss to the Knicks
The Knicks shot 74% from the field in a season high 41-point first quarter of a 116-107 win over the Lakers. The Knicks led by 14 at the quarter and 19 at the half. Los Angeles was able to cut the lead to seven late in the fourth quarter to almost get in the backdoor but three Tyson Chandler offensive rebounds and a couple of Jason Kidd free throws sealed the deal for New York. Carmelo Anthony had 22 points in the first quarter and finished with 30 while sitting out the fourth after hitting the floor hard after a Dwight Howard foul. Kobe had 31 for the Lakers who fell to 2-8 on the road and 4-9 under D’Antoni who was roundly booed in his return to Madison Square Garden. Knick coach Mike Woodson is 36-11 in regular season games since taking over from D’Antoni.
Rutgers coach suspended and fined 50K
Scarlet Knight head basketball coach Mike rice has been suspended for three games without pay and fined $50,000 by the university for violating school athletic department policies. From the Newark Star Ledger …..
The decision … followed an internal investigation that revealed abusive, profane language used by Rice toward his players and an incident during his first or second season in which Rice threw basketballs at some players’ heads during practice, according to multiple people with knowledge of the findings and the video evidence presented to Rice.
From Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti …..
“Accountability is a vital element of the Rutgers Athletics family, and it is imperative our head coaches act and lead in a responsible manner. This was not an easy decision for me to make but absolutely necessary to ensure what is best for our program.”
Pernitti said that he had never considered firing Rice.
From coach Mike Rice …..
“Since becoming a coach at the age of 21, I have taken great pride in not only helping young men learn the game of basketball but also in teaching them about character, respect and hard work. To the extent that my conduct has ever been in contrast with those principles, I have failed my players — and myself — and I take full responsibility for my actions and accept the terms of my suspension. I will learn from my mistakes and I will become a better coach, teacher and role model. I sincerely apologize to our players, both past and present.”
Rice will be barred from contact with the team until he returns to the sidelines January 2ns in the Knight’s Big East opener with Syracuse. Rutgers is 6-2 and plays UAB at home on Sunday.
Josh Hamilton to the Angels, 5-years for $125 million
Ichiro takes less to stay with the Yankees
Ichiro enjoyed playing in New York so much that he’s decided to come back for two more years at less money than he could have gotten elsewhere. Suzuki and the Bombers have agreed to a two-year deal worth about $13 million contingent upon Ichiro passing a physical. The deal will take Suzuki past his 41st birthday and will allow him to possibly become the first Japanese player to collect 3000 hits in the US. He currently sits at 2606. Reports had the Phillies and another team offering Ichiro $15 million over two years.
