UConn dumped Syracuse 66-58 in the final regular season Big East meeting between the two college basketball superpowers. The Huskies got 17 points from Ryan Boatright and 15 from Omar Calhoun while Shabazz Napier chipped in with seven assists. The Orangemen were doomed by poor shooting, 23-65 from the field (34.5%) and just 8-14 (57.1%) from the line. Next year, Syracuse will move on the ACC while UConn will play in the re-aligned Big East or move on to a better offer.

In yesterday’s report, SB3 featured the knee injury to Kentucky power forward Nerls Noel. A Wednesday MRI revealed a torn ACL and Noel is done for the season. Noel is a potential No. 1 overall pick in June’s NBA Draft. He was averaging 10.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.5 blocks before Tuesday’s game vs Florida.

On tobacco road, Duke turned back North Carolina on Coach K’s 66th birthday. The Blue Devils trailed well into the second half before taking control in the final five minutes of a 73-68 win. POY candidate Mason Plumlee had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Duke. PJ Hairston had 23-8-3 for the Tar Heels in a losing cause.

Hedo Turkoglu suspended 20 games

Orlando Magic power forward Hedo Turoglu has been suspeneded 20 games for violating the NBA’s anti-drug policy. Turkoglu tested positive for methenolone which is catagorized as a steroid.

Turkoglu released this statement through the team:

“While I was back home in Turkey this past summer, I was given a medication by my trainer to help recover more quickly from a shoulder injury. I didn’t know that this was a banned substance and didn’t check before taking it.

“I take full responsibility for anything that goes into my body. This was a complete error in judgment on my part, and I apologize to the Orlando Magic organization, the league, my teammates and the Magic fans. I know I have let down a lot of people, and I am truly sorry for my mistake.”

Oscar Pistorius charged with murder in the shooting of his girlfriend

South African paralympic superstar Oscar Pistorius has been charged with shooting death of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. You may know Pistorius as “The Blade Runner”, a monniker given for his high-tech artificial legs.

Reeva Steenkamp, a model who spoke out on Twitter against rape and abuse of women, was shot four times in the predawn hours in the home, in a gated community in the capital, Pretoria, police said.

The Alabama fan accused of poisoning the Toomer Oaks at Auburn has had his bail revoked based in another unrelated arrest and a bench warrant for a failure to appear. You can read about this entire sick and twisted story by clicking here.

Real Madrid and Manchester United draw 1-1

The showdown between Champions League heavyweights Real Madrid and Manchester United ended in a 1-1 draw. Dannt Welbeck notched an all-important away goal for Man U with a header at the 20 minute mark. Cristiano Renaldo got the equalizer, also on a header, ten minutes later. The teams meet at Old Trafford on the return leg March 5th.
