Canes blast Duke with 25-1 run

When you are the No.1 ranked team in college basketball, you always have a bullseye on your back and you had better play like it. Duke’s second run in the top spot lasted about 48 hours as the Blue Devils were pummeled 90-63 at Miami. It was the third worst loss by a No.1 team ever and the Dukies worst regular season loss since 1984.

Memphis routs Lakers as things get bad to worse

Even a high-tension team meeting couldn’t get the Lakers out of their current funk. Wednesday night, the Lakers lost their fourth straight game, seventh straight road game and 10th in their last 12 games overall, a 106-93 drubbing at Memphis. The Grizz, who hadn’t scored more than 85 points in six straight games posted 106 Wednesday to improve to 12-0 when they hit the century mark. Darrell Arthur came off the pine to lead Memphis with 20 points becoming the 29th player this year to have his season high against the Lakers.

NFL News and Notes

The NFL fashion police were at work on Wednesday fining the 49ers Frank Gore $10,500 for wearing his socks too low in the NFC Championship game. The socks eveidently didn’t affect Gore on the foeld as he rushed for 90 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns.

Tom Brady was fined $10K by the league for his kick slide on Ed Reed in the AFC Championship game. Brady called Reed during the week to apologize and things are all good. FYI, a 10K fine to a guy making $14 million a year is the equivalent of a $36 dollar fine to a guy making $50,000 a year.

The family of Junior Seau filed a wrongful death lawsuit Wednesday in California Superior Court in San Diego, blaming the NFL for its “acts or omissions” that hid the dangers of repetitive blows to the head. It says Seau developed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from those hits, and accuses the NFL of deliberately ignoring and concealing evidence of the risks associated with traumatic brain injuries. Seau died at age 43 of a self-inflicted gunshot in May. He was diagnosed with CTE, based on posthumous tests, earlier this month.

The Jets are said to be exploring their options to deal Darrelle Revis. The star shut down corner is coming off ACL surgery and set to make $6 million dollars this year and cannot be franchised be franchised in 2014.

As of today, Nascar’s most popular driver is unsponsored for 13 races of this year’s upcoming Sprint Cup championship. Hendrick Racing owner Rick Hendrick doesn’t seem too concerned and told the media on Wednesday that several deals are in the hopper with some imminent. Hendrick’s other three cars are booked throughout 2013.

Real Madrid goalie Iker Casillas breaks hand, out indefintely

Real Madrid and Spanish national team goalie Iker Casillas has broken a bone in his left hand and will be out indefinitely. Casillas broke his hand when he was kicked by teammate Alvaro Arbeloa who was trying to clear a ball in the area during Real’s Copa del Rey quarterfinal at Valencia on Wednesday. Casillas will se a specialist who will determine the best course of treatment. No timetable has been set for Casillas’ return.
