Gay big off the bench in Raptor debut

Rudy Gay came off the bench to score 20 points at make his Toronto debut a successful one as the Raptors drilled the Clippers 98-73. Amir Johnson and DeMar DeRozan each added 19 for the winners. The son of former Cincinnati Bearcat and Los Angeles Laker point guard Nick Van Excel was sentenced to 60 years in jail for murder on Friday. The prosecution had sought the death penalty. Nicky Maxwell Van Excel was convicted of shooting a friend in December of 2010 and then dumping the body by a lake outside of Dallas. A tearful Nick Van Exel, who spoke at the sentencing hearing, now works for the Atlanta Hawks.

Michigan at Indiana in Saturday Big Ten showdown

The usual monster slate of college basketball tips off today with No.6 Syracuse visiting Pittsburg. The Orangemen are three-point dogs in that matchup. Big East home favorites of less than five are 0-13 at the window this year. In unquestionable the feature game of the day/night, No.1 Michigan takes on No.3 Indiana in Bloomington. Indiana is a four-point favorite in the showdown that tips at 9:00 PM EST on ESPN.

Houston Texan running back Arian Foster told Jime Rome that he will not have off-season surgery to correct an irregular heartbeat. Foster missed the second half of the Texans 23-6 loss to Minnesota after an episode. Foster has had the condition since childhood.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have named Dave Wannstedt as their special teams coordinator. The ex-Bears/Dolphins/Pittsburg head coach had been in Buffalo the last two years but was let go when the Chan Gailey staff was fired on New Year’s Eve.

Lefty still four shots clear at Phoenix

Phil Mickelson missed the 36-hole record for TPC Scottsdale by double-bogeying the final hole but still has a four shot lead in Phoenix at 17-under. Lefty’s Thursday round of 60 plus yesterday’s 65 puts him four clear of Bill Haas with Keegan Bradley and Brandt Snedeker five back.

UFC 156 (Aldo vs Edgar) official weigh in

The UFC is back with a loaded Super Bowl card Saturday night at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. In the main event, Jose Aldo (-210) defends his featherweight championship against Frankie Edgar (+170). UFC 156 also marks the return of Alistair Overeem to the octagon. Overeem, in his first fight back since testing positive for elevated testosterone levels is -400 vs Bigfoot Silva (-300). SB3 will have a comple recap complete with the post-fight presser in tomorrow’s Super Bowl edition.

Zetterberg hat trick leads the Wings over St Louis

Henrik Zetterberg had a hat trick and five points overall as the Detroit Red Wings beat St Louis 5-3 on Friday. The Wings trailed 3-2 heading into the third period but put the Blues away with a 3-0 final 20 minutes. Detroit improved to 4-2-1 while St Louis fell to 6-2.
