PEDS dominate Tuesday’s sport news

Ray Lewis denies using deer-antler spray containing the banned performance enhancer (IGF-1). Strangely enough, despite being banned, the NFL does not test for IGF-1. The Lewis story came to light in a story that will be released by a Pulitzer Prize winning writer in the upcoming Sports Illustrated.

The company that sold the deer-antler spray the Baltimore Raven’s Ray Lewis also claims the spray was used by several members of the National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide. You can read all about that story here

Not to be outdone, baseball and PEDS were back in the news when it was reported that Alex Rodriguez, Gio Gonzalez, Nelson Cruz and Melky Cabrera were named as players that were treated at a PED clinic in southern Florida in 2012. Read about that story here.

NBA News and Notes

It looks like Greg Oden will be going to the bank again with Miami and Cleveland first in line to write the check. An injury waiting to happen, Oden averaged 9.4 ppg and 7.3 rpg in 60 regular season games over four years for Portland. Micro-fracture surgeons in both cities are preparing even as you read this.

Noels blocks 12 shots as Kentucky dumps Ole Miss

Nerlens Noel missed his only shot from the field and six of his eight free throws but there was no doubt who was the most important UK player on the floor. The Wildcat big man blocked a school record 12 shots as kentucky earned it’s first signature win of the season with an 87-74 road thrashing of No.16 Ole Miss. Kyle Wiltjer had 26 points including five treys for the winners. Ole Miss, who had it’s nine game winning streak snapped at nine, got 22 points from LaDarius White.

UFC will ass Strawweight division (115 lbs) in the near future

Tuesday, Dana White announced that the UFC will be adding another new weight class to the organization …. 115 pounders or Strawweights. With the success and popularity of smaller fighers like Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson on the rise and the UFC poised to make incursions into Latin America and Asia, it makes sense to add another division for the little guy. The UFC just added and crowned it’s first Flyweight champion in September of 2012.

US and Canada play to 0-0 draw, World Cup qualifying next

US Soccer played Canada to a 0-0 draw in it’s final tuneup before World Cup qualifying. With most of his regulars remaining with the European clubs, Jurgen Klinsmann was forced to change all 11 starters from the unit that drew Russia 2-2 back in December. It was the first time that the US National Team started and all MSL lineup since 2007. World Cup qualifying starts February 6th with a match against Honduras.
