Texans and Foster run over Bengals, Pack beat Ponder-less Vikes
The Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers are the first two teams to advance to the quarterfinal round of the NFL playoffs. The Texans held the ball 39 minutes in outgaining the Bengals 420-198 in Houston’s 19-13 win. Arian Foster was the workhorse carrying the ball 32 for 140 yards. Cincinnati’s only touchdown came on a pick six and the Bengals have still not won a playoff game since 1990, the longest current drought in the NFL.
In Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers was an economical 23-33 for 274 and a score as the Packers held the Vikes Adrian Peterson to just 99 yards on 22 carries. Minnesota was forced to play backup quarterback Joe Webb when starter Christian Ponder was unable to go due to an elbow injury that had limited his practice all week. Webb went 11-30 for 180 with a pick and a score. He had on;y taken three snaps all year and had not thrown a pass this season.

Four of the last five in the series were decided by exactly two points so this one figured to be close and was. DeAngelo Harrison’s jumper with 29 seconds left was the difference for the Red Storm.

US beats Sweden to win World Juniors Hockey Championship
Rocco Grimaldi scored two goals and Vince Trochek sealed the deal with an empty-netter as the US defeated Sweden 3-1 in the world juniors championship final at Ufa, Russia. American goalie John Gibson made 26 saves and was named MVP of the tournament. It was the third win for the US who also won in 2004 and 2010. Russia beat Canada 6-5 in the consolation game to leave the Canadians without a medal for the first time since 1998.
