Bielema to Arkansas in a surprise hire

Less than 72 hours after dropping 70 points on Nebraska to claim Wisconsin’s third straight Big Ten title, Badger head coach Brett Bielema has accepted the same job at Arkansas. Bielema was 68-24 in his seven years at Arkansas. This quite a coup for a Razorback program that has been scrambling since the Bobby Petrino debacle. It is also a black eye for the Big Ten who saw the coach of their conference champion leave for a middle of the pack SEC school that hasn’t won a conference championship since 1989 and nothing since joining the SEC.

Malzahn takes the Auburn job

Arkansas State HC Gus Malzahn will be returning to Auburn. Malzahn was the offensive co-ordinator for the Gene Chizik and the Tigers between 2009-2011 including the 2010 National Championship team. Now he will replace Chizik who was fired after a 3-9 season that included Auburn’s first winless season ever (0-8) in the SEC. Malzahn took the job at Arkansas State and led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record, the Sunbelt Conference Championship and a trip to the Godaddy Bowl to play Kent.

Ryan names Sanchez starter vs Jacksonville

In possibly the biggest decision of his head coaching career, Rex Ryan has named Mark Sanchez as his starter for Sunday’s game at Jacksonville. The Jets HC lifted Sanchez in the third quarter of New York’s 7-6 win over Arizona in favor of former Alabama QB Greg McElroy who led the flyboys on their only scoring drive of the day. It was the first time in Sanchez’ 3 1/2 year career that he was benched. He was 10-21 for 97 yards and three picks.

Wizards knock off Heat for second win

In Tuesday’s NBA action, Washington shocked the Miami Heat 105-101 for just their second victory of the season. The 2-13 Wizards were led by their bench with Jamal Crawford dailing up 22 points and six assists while Kevin Seraphin was adding 16 points and 10 rebounds. Miami’s Big Three all had at least 20 points led by Lebron Jaames 26-13-11 triple-double. After going 5-1 on Monday, the dogs had another profitable night at 4-2. The over was also 4-2 while home teams did the 3-3 split. The NBA is back tonight with a full 11 game card.

Holy Dick Cheney !!! Robin Yount/Dale Sveum hunting accident

Add Robin Yount to people you probably don’t want to go hunting with. It was revealed during the Winter Meetings that the Brewer HOFamer accidently shot Cubs manager Dale Sveum while quail hunting in Arizona. Sveum took some shrapnel in the ear that drew blood but nothing serious.

NHL lockout update

After a marathon session of talks between the owners and players on Tuesday, the league and the NHLPA have announced another round of negotiations on Wednesday. Progress appears to have been made and both sides are said to be “cautiously optimistic”. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr were not part of the talks. Wednesday is Day 81 of the lockout.
